Did you hit any bumps during the short drive? Was the car recently on a lift? Did your battery get low due to low temps outside? All of these can cause the error to populate.
Did you cycle the ignition to see if it went away?
Have you tried to pull your codes to see which codes are coming up? Which codes are you getting?
Finally, did you clear said codes to see if the SAH message goes away?

PS...try every possible DIY fix and get advice here before outsourcing to a mechanic. And NEVER bring it to a dealer unless you are EXTREMELY desperate. Even then I advise against it. Dealer Tech's are hacks and the car being 20 yrs old most dealerships will consider it a no fly zone.
SAH errors can come up for a dozen reasons. The majority are just a communication disruption. That which fix themselves and just require a code clearing.
As mentioned above grounds can and often times are cause for this error as well..
Start with the easy stuff that's free.

Last year on first drive after winter sleep service traction control and active handling message came up.
Got back home and took a chance at cleaning engine compartment grounds and I cleaned the passenger side frame rail ground first and that fixed it. Cleared codes and never had an issue since.

First he needs to pull the codes, attempt a reset and clean the grounds. Eliminate the free and easy stuff first. Then move on to the headaches.

Sure, it could be the SWPS. But I wouldn't be worried about that rabbit hole yet. That error pops up sporadically on a lot of these cars for simple to solve reasons. I've cleared that code dozens of times in 22 years.

It's sporadic for me and a reset erases it. Only had the persistent recurring issue once. Ground plug wire was slightly backed out of connection. Prongs not making full contact. Plugged her in securely and persistent SAH message went away.

Anyway, my mistake was NOT buying a new one when it dumped 15 years ago, while they were still available new. Oh well........

Service active handling.
Took the car out today and no active handling light came on. We did not drive very far. I might take it out on a longer ride tomorrow for a Cars And Coffee, and I will give an update. We did hit a few rough bumps and or small holes in the road on our drive yesterday. I will hope for the best. Haven’t pulled up any codes, or Reset anything yet. 🙏

No, I must confess, no new SWPS was ever installed. Can't find a new one now, and don't wanna chance a used one. It did drive me batty for awhile. But I've gotten used to it after 15 years!!! Every time I turn around I drop $500+ on parts, accessories, nice to have and must haves.

My 2000 throws the light pretty regular if I park with the steering wheel fully turned and power down. Like clockwork, I get the light when I start it next. The light stays on for that operating cycle. If I park straight (or at least not full lock), the light does not come back. It’s been doing this for about 3 years. I consciously try not to park full lock, but sometimes it can’t be helped.

I hate error messages on my dashboards even if the error isn't significant. I see it like this...if it is the SWPS I would take my chances on a used replacement. When and if the time comes and I want to sell the car it's an issue some buyers would run from. Why not fix it while I own it vs. fixing it to sell it?
Same goes for folks that upgrade their homes before they sell them. Why not enjoy things the way I should before I part ways with it?
