I am looking at buying a 1999 where the car has only been driven about 500 over the past year and the battery is disconnected when the car is not in use, per the owner. The owner is alleging that before the next state inspection that I should "get the computer ready". Is there a normal procedure that needs to be followed on these cars before inspection or is that not accurate? I did test drive the car twice and there is no check engine light.
Usually as long as there are no issues you can just drive it for a few days and it will become
ready. Read your DIC codes and see if there are any current codes. A cheap obd2 code reader will tell you if it's "ready". You can go to an auto parts store and ask them to read the car. They will do it for free.
Same issue here, May 2021 needed emissions test and car was stored with battery not hooked up.
Hooked up battery, drove car to emissions test place but just parked out front, brought my $20.00 cheap hyper tough Walmart code scanner I use for another car, it wasn’t ready, so restarted and drove car some more, went to a gas station shut off car, tried again still not ready.
Kept driving places and shutting car off and retested until it showed ready.
Took to emissions place and passed.
Might be better if you have a few days to drive around and not try to cram it into one day like I did.
Google search shows 00 and older allows for 2 not readies in the system with the exception of the cats in NJ. I would verify on your own as it may have changed and laws vary by state. Auto parts stores should have a scanner which can pull up the state of the various emissions systems.
If your state inspection station connects a computer to the OBD port, I think disconnecting the battery will require performing the driving cycle to pass inspection even though there are no error codes or check engine light.
Drive cycle for the corvette look it up it’s available online everywhere ..1. Start car and immediately turn on the a/c and front /rear defrosters crank blower to high as well. 2 let idle for 2.5 minutes I think … 3. Leave all that stuff on turn off as your about to accelerate to 55. Speed up to 55 let off down shift to 20 speed back up hold 55 for about 5 minutes..4 drive until fuel is about 1/2 tank refill this does the evap test .
the actual instructions are online but these are close
