If you are referring to etching and sealing the side covers, if it isn't leaking leave it alone. I believe GM started without the sealant but side cover leaks were common thus the sealant.

Correct. We just cleaned the diff covers, replaced the axle seals and o-rings. For the record we replaced the stud (someone had kind of goobered it up before I got there) with a bolt of the same dimensions.
