dbgoodwin- You are mistaken about the lock not being removed from MN6 vehicles. But jackthelad insinuating the LMC5 is "an unnecessary fix" is blatantly incorrect.
So you're both incorrect. Which if one wants to speak with authority about "misinformation" they should get it right themselves.
The LMC5 is a good product that works. Advising others different is a fail.

Ya learn something new every day. Like I said, I guess NHTSA never updated their recall overview to reflect the lock being removed from manual transmission vehicles.
A forum member here ran a GM VIS for me back in 2012 or so, I must have deleted that PM though unfortunately, I kinda wish I could look over it again.

I bought my MN6 new at a time when GM was still trying to figure out a solution. They replaced the locking mechanism. Didn't work. They installed a bypass relay it didn't work. They removed the locking mechanism and although the wheel no longer locks...you guessed it...the removal didnt stop the pull key /2mph issue.
The LMC5 without the brown wire mod also did NOT solve for this. The brown wire mod did the trick. Many years of error free startups since.
So I've been through it all over 23 years with this car. The LMC5 with brown wire mod is the ultimate solution.
My lock plate was not removed on the recall, if was supposed to be maybe someone at dealer was being lazy.
By the way, my car was at dealer September 2004 getting recall, they had it for several days.
Anyways in my experience the LMC5 was necessary after getting stranded June or July 2018, and the steering wheel was locked bad, fought and fought pulling fuse etc reinstall and keep trying to break free.
Other GM vehicles have anti theft stuff strand owners, brother has a Cadillac that won’t start and it flashes a message about theft deterrent, he bought another car and it’s been in his driveway since November 2021, I found a way to start car by using jumper wires and it drives, he needs to drive it to GM dealer to have module reflashed.
The "C" notice did not go out to dealers until 2006. So, any work done before then was not the "C" version. I had had the previous recalls done and when it failed again I called the local dealer and they confirmed the car showed up as "fixed". It was not until I dug out out all three versions of the notice and sent them to the dealer that I got action. The dealer contacted Chevrolet service and they came back (after some weeks) and said they would fix it, This was about 10 years ago. Interestingly, The "C" version is not labelled a "Recall", but a "Special Policy Adjustment". Special Policy Adjustment"Special Polict Adjustment
Incidentally, the way I got it moving with the column locked was to make sure the battery was fully charged, set the charger to "boost" and then start the car. Those extra couple of volts applied to the relay did the trick.
Hello,
I own a ‘02 Z06 that still has a functioning column lock. Never have I experienced any DIC messages related to the column lock issues. After reading this thread it seems the smart play is to take the preemptive approach and install a LMC5 w/ brown wire mod (BWM) and hopefully never have an issue. It seems some have skipped the BWM during LMC5 install only to later have an issue and perform the BWM. Is there any reason to not do the BWM at time of initial LMC5 install?
Thanks!
The instructions that come with the kit made it seem like an optional step (at least to me) and that’s why I didn’t do BWM at time of initial install. However, not long after I got one message, went ahead and “finished the job” with the BWM and never looked back.

when I talked to the owner of compliance parts he told me that some c5’s will need the brown wire mod, and some won’t, but the only real way to tell is to install it without the brown wire mod, and if you have issues do the mod.
