Weird shifter issue

So I have a 1998 A4 vert. Since I have had the car I have not been able to shift it into 1st. Drive, 3rd, and 2nd all work fine, but for some reason 1st doesn’t work. It almost feels like something is jamming it and preventing me from getting the shifter into first. Any ideas before I crack into it and see what I can see?

You should have some means of adjusting the shift cable, only speculating since I have a M6 car, and don't have experience with autos

You should start at adjusting the shift cable. If you Google "C5 corvette shift cable adjustment" you will find You Tube and links to many sites showing how it's done.
