Alright alright, I know I should know this, but something doesn't seem right. I left my car for three months but forgot to disconnect the negative terminal. Of course the battery is flat now. I have a car charger/starter and following the instructions, hooked it up to the battery+ and the recommended negative point on the engine block. The charger is set to 10Amp@12V which is again the recommended setting. The problem is that the hood light and interior lights start flashing and the car makes a clicking sound which is not the behaviour that I expect. I dare not leave it like this or try to start it. Am I missing something?
Well after a night of charging on its own, the battery seemed to not accept a charge. It is just as flat as when I started yesterday. Looks like I'll have to go get myself an Optima Red Top like everyone else.
Lead acid batteries do not like sitting idle for months at a time. The plates collect lead sulfate which is an insulator. Once sulfated, the battery is a door stop! If you are going to store your car for long periods (more than 4 weeks), then periodically charge the battery. If you have a battery charger, then buy an interval timer and set it for its minimum daily time interval (usually 15 min) and plug your battery charger into it.
