If you like the car, buy it. My 2000 EBCM is original, 23 years old. The 2000, among base models, has the best factory cam of any model year. It is the only non-Z06 cam with .500 lift, I. and E. In fact, you can't change to 1.8 rockers on a 2000 WITHOUT changing valvesprings. It also has the tightest LSA of any model year. Sure, it's not a racing cam, but every little bit helps. My 2000 A4 Vert eventually ran a 12.50@114 mph, with nothing but boltons and a tune. I never even had the sparkplugs out. Totally stock internals......
I think Chevy's level of support is generally adequate. If Chevy procured a supply of parts for 30 years instead of 10 it would mean everyone pays more to support the few failures. I prefer the individual take that risk. And this problem is only going to get worse regarding computer components in every product. It's simply not cost effective with current technology for small runs of some specific computer chips. So failures of computer components in many cases mean the item will no longer function - forever.
Luckily in the case of the C5 2000 and older EBCM if it fails the car still functions, you just lose anti-lock brakes and traction control. Yes it's something to evaluate but it's still possible to drive the car safely.
