Default Exhaust Install - DIY Question

Good morning all,

For a drive way install...jack and jack stands....

Are Rhino ramps the perfect height or too low?

What is the consensus on how high in the air/ far off the ground the Corvette should be to install an exhaust system?

If you're removing the stock mufflers, Rhino Ramps willnot cut it. You need to get the rear at least 36" off of the ground to be able to swing the stock mufflers out as one piece.

I put my Z06 exhaust on at home...36" is about right. I have some nice tall jack stands and put the front on ramps. It took longer to jack the car up than to actually change out the exhaust. About 1 hour total with a beverage break

Hope this helps

Jeff

Search the archives, I've seen very scary pics of a C5's back end 3 feet in the air.
Find an independent muffler shop on a slow day. They'll put it on a lift.
Probably $50 dollars and 30 minutes later you'll be smiling and safely on your way.
This is one mod I won't do without a lift. You have to drop the sway bar (lube the bushings before re-installation) unbolt the pipes and weave the mufflers out.

:iagree: I just installed a Borla Singer on my 2001 Mag Red Vert and what a pain in the butt doing it in the driveway. Again I spent most of my time jacking. When the front spoiler is on the ground, than your just about high enough (36"). If I had to do it again I would find a slow shop and put her on the rack.! :yesnod:

I did mine with a Kwiklift PLUS jacks. It took twice as long to get the car safely in the air than it did to do the R&R. Find a full size lift.

Hello all,

Now that I am a veteran....

The higher the better.

Use a rack or jack up the front of the car 36 inches and the rear, from bottom of tires to the floor 48".

Additionally on A4's, removing the passenger side heat shield (near the front of the rear tire) with one 10mm nut and one 13mm bolt will GREATLY aid the installation and save some time.

On a side note, for A4 this is the time to change out your fuel filter. After inspecting the inside of the filter, mine with 36K mileage was premature to change out could have saved $60 dollars.

A 5OK mileage fuel filter swap would be a better recommendation, at least from me.

GM has no replacement mileage/ time for this item in its maintenance schedule, so we "auto enthusiasts" are on our own to figure this out

Is there a need to raise the car this high if you are willing to cut the stock exhaust out?

No, if you cut the over-axle-pipes you can remove the stock exhaust on Rhino Ramps.

Cutting the pipes will make it easy to remove. Some after market pipes are installed in sections. In that case you could do it in the driveway with jackstands.
BTW- Did you find the problem with you speed sensor codes? After looking at the manual it appears likely a poor connection, especially if it's even slightly intermittent. The hubs have a magnet that the sensor picks up and the speed is then calculated by the output signal of the wheel sensor. If you need more specific info let me know.

I've changed mine twice. First time I borrowed a lift and I agree with what others have posted, you need to be pretty high (3 to 4 feet) to remove the stock in 1 piece. That's too high to be safe on jack stands. However, if you cut the stock in 2 pieces then you could do it on your garage floor. I gave mine in 1 piece out in the shed, along with the intact factory exhaust from my '99 Camaro SS, original wheels from the SS, differential from my '68, etc. etc. Point is do you need the stock system???
Once you have the stock off you can easily do the aftermarket in your garage. I took the Corsa Pace Car system off and installed a Stinger system easily with the rear only a little raised.
Good luck.

I tried the ramp route. Had 8" ramps. Too high to drive the front on and too narrow to drive the back on.

I ended up driving the front tires up on some 1.5" thick bricks.

Jacked up the rear with a hydrolic jack with a 2x4 on top. This allowed me to get my jack stands (w/small piece of 2x4 on top so I wouldn't damage the rocker panels) underneath at their lowest setting.

I undid the sway bar and swung it out the way undid the all the bolts and swung it down. Then I got a carbine blade in the sawzall and went through the old pipes right in front of the mufflers like butter.

The new stingers came in sections. Put in the over axel pipes first and just for fun tightend them up and cranked her up to hear what she sounds like open. It was close to the what I imagine the sirens sung to lure Oddisus to their islands. But I resisted and put the mufflers on anyway.
