Min my 2000 Z51 the autocraft gold 78FT-2-S 825 CA battery died. I can’t seem to find this battery anywhere so now I must get a replacement. What battery should I get, should I opt for a AGM? What is the difference in reserve power 110, 115, 120 ???
How hard will it to install. ( pardon the tender)
this is what I have in 2004. You have side post so I would just look for the side post version. Easiest battery install. Just undo the hold down and pull out.
If you are a Costco member, consider buying their Interstate brand. You will get an extra year of warranty if you purchase with the Costco Citi card. Mine is going on 6 years now and still works well.
What ever you do, get yourself an AGM battery. If you get a lead acid battery, you will run the risk of the battery leaking acid that will drip on all your wires and computer modules. Acid on your wiring will really ruin your month.

I have to disagree! YES, GM had issues with their early OEM Delco batteries. They did leak around the terminal post and cause havoc! The newer lead acid batteries are very good and SELDOM if ever leak.
C5 battery replacement: GM recommends installing a battery with a 120 Amp Hour RESERVE CAPACITY for our C5s!
I agree however,,,,, finding an OEM C5 Battery Group 75 standard battery with 120RC is very difficult!
This is what I did. I researched batteries until my eyes bled. I could not find a group 75 battery that meet my needs. However, the Group 78 battery did. It will fit but the O Riley Battery that I purchased, I had to remove the outboard lip from the battery tray ( very easy) for it to fit length wise and I elongated the slot in the battery hold down clamp as the battery is just a little bit wider than the OEM. battery. Worked like a champ and I have a bigger battery with more RC, easier to find and last longer.
C6.. If you think that the C5 is hard on batteries, the C6 is a WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD!! AGM ALL THE WAY BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

thanks for the info. The battery that died was a size 78, so I shouldn’t have any problems with the fit. As for the GM battery, I see it costs almost $100 more than Everstart, Duracell, Exide, Bosch. AGM batteries.

Thanks Bill- I agree that the technology has changed. I just had a 3 month old lead acid battery leak in my C4 ZR1. Fortunately I caught it early (like days) and there are very few wires under the tray. The plastic tube protected the wires, however the acid was eating through plastic at a voracious rate. I cleaning it up and we are now good, but that experience made a AGM believer out of me.
As Dave Chappelle says, "it's always funny until it happens to you."
You want to get the highest RC (Reserve Capacity) in minutes you can get…you are in Florida so don’t worry about CCA…120 !!
Reserve Capacity is important on all newer vehicles because they have a CONSTANT LOW CURRENT DRAIN that supplies the critical modules like the (PCM, BCM RFA ) when the vehicle is in sleep mode. Our C5s consume 0.025 to 0.030 milliamps when in sleep mode. With 110 to 120 RC, the battery will be able to start and run the car after it sits for a couple months. without issues.

can anyone tell me what replacing this battery will entail? Is there a procedure?
Guys...this is a dead battery...not putting a man into space . 13mm hold down bolt...remove hold down....10mm terminal nut loosen [do negative then positive]...remove battery...take it your parts counter....pay...reinstall in reverse order lol
I do have AGMs in all of my Mercedes cars...because THEY ARE REQUIRED AND CAME STOCK IN ALL OF THEM!!! These are Chevys lol. If you have a top post situation...and the extra coin...get an AGM if it tickles your fancy. If you like to throw your car on a tender over the winter months...get a lead acid battery. AGMs don't like a lot of amps and have to be charged differently.

My 2 cents.
if you look at the photo my battery has side posts with a few connections, does the bolt screw out with these connections then back in the replacement battery?

Just a suggestion - It sounds like you are not comfortable with doing the work yourself. While a battery replacement is a pretty straight forward job, you do need a few tools and some basic knowledge. Perhaps consider buying a battery from a place like Pep Boys who will install it for you. The brand of battery is not all that critical and any name brand 78 battery will likely serve you well for years.

Yes. Uscrew NEGATIVE first...then Positive. Plop new battery in. reattach POSITIVE FIRST....then NEGATIVE cable. I dont like how long that negative battery cable bolt is. Maybe spring for a standard size side post terminal lug set while your at the part store. Unless, there are other negative connections I'm not seeing.

ok thank. The post are long due to added electronics the previous owner had installed (amp, sub) in the truck floor. Was making sure none of the vetted electrics will be affected. Guess I will see when I call up codes. Never had battery with side posts, I will try to replace myself. Lastly so no more trickle battery tender??
Thanks all for the quick responses
AGM for certain. I recently bought the Die Hard from Advance Auto. They bought the Die Hard brand. I wanted to buy something that could easily be replaced if it died during the warranty. I’m in Florida and the heat is hard on the batteries here. This one has done a good job so far.
If you buy it at Advance they’ll install it for you, and dispose of the old one, or carry your dead one in…

Die Hard's are pretty descent these days. The think I like about advance batteries is...no matter where the F' you are...there's always and advance within 10 miles lol Walmart batteries...maybe so, but having to wait in a Wally World Line...Hard PASS!!!
Also, if any of yall remember the good old days of 5 to 7 years warranty on a battery...well these days 2 is about the max you get from damm near any retailer. I had a high dollar interstate one in my C4 and though the warranty sticker of 2 years was a mistake. Nope...2 years. Glad the previous owner ponied up the duckets for that one lol
Note: the Die Hard did with a three year warranty. Three years full replacement. Frankly, I’d prefer to swap it out after 3 years anyway, so I don’t get stuck. These things sometimes die with no warning. I don’t like no warning…lol.
