Default Help-P1870 Code

Hi Guys!
I'm new on here and tried to post this yesterday but cant find the post. I just purchased a 2001 C5 Convertible Automatic Trans. It has 37,000 miles and very clean.
I bought it from a dealership as is with no warranty. Im 71 years old and the only other Vette I had was in 1976 which was a 1966. So I'm not real familiar with these Tube Drieshaft with the Transmission in the rear.
I test drove the car for about 20 minutes and found no problems. After purchasing the car, I drove home from the dealership on I-85 From Spartanburg, SC to Greenville, SC for about 30 minutes at around 65 MPH without any issues. After getting off I-85 and into town traffic, I noticed a hard shift from 1st to 2nd, then smooth shifting after that. I reached my house and my wife wanted to go for a ride. I went up toward the mountains and got onto a 2-lane road and was cruising at about 60MPH and still noticing the hard shift from 1st to 2nd then smooth. After cruising for about 30 minutes, the check engine light came on , and all the gages looked normal. I returned home and checked it and got P1870 Code.
I know this is the hard shift from 1st to 2nd, with something slipping. Question is, what do I need to check and will it damage the trans to drive it with this going on? What is the normal trans temp driving in 90 Deg outside temp?
Thanks for any help, I'm new at this.
Thanks, Rob.
