transmission linkage?
I just wanted to check for leaks and the temperature reading. Everything was good.
I noticed my gear shift (automatic) was feeling soft, too much play. I came to a stop sign and couldn't go. None of the gears were working.
I called triple A and had it towed to the house. I'm getting ready to jack it up. What should I look for? Linkage broke or disconnected?
Thanks
Rock

. The issue is the shift cable. It is possible the cable broke. However, it is most likely that one of the bushings failed, and this caused the cable to disconnect. The bushing is a cheap and easy fix, but the cables are plastic, and are also known to break, so I would recommend replacing both the cable and bushings while you're in there.

Usually the cable is fine and is just a broken bushing at one of its ends.Even though most probably only 1 gave up, this is a call to replace bushings at both ends.
All that's needed is the kit. Use the white bushings (the orange ones are for Ford):
And
shows how to do it.
A little dielectric grease combined with long channel-lock pliers will make things a lot easier when installing the bushings. Just get 2 pieces of cardboard or something similar and tape them over the grooves in the pliers jaws to protect things when pressing the bushings in.
This is very doable and it's just a few bucks and a couple of hours to change the bushing at both ends of the cable, taking your time

see post 5
could be bushings at either end or the cable itself, start by looking at the linkage at trans end

Thank you for your warm welcome
. I know my inbox is full, I have to take care of that. I'm gonna try to get back to speed.Cheers, my friend!
I got my shifter cable today.
I'm still a little confused on installing it. I've watched videos and some say to start at the front and others say to start at the rear.
Why does the rear bracket have to be removed but not the front?
Thanks
