Default 2002 - Key Fob Issues

I've had my '02 Vert for about 18 mo's. Key Fobs worked fine until a couple days ago. Now all of a sudden, both don't work. On the one fob I use the most, I thought it was the battery. I changed the battery other day, and seemed to have it working. But now I can't get either to work. All four tire pressure monitors still seem to work/are showing pressures in the DIC.

I've tried searching in the forum, and all I can find is the relearn procedure via the DIC. I've tried that with both FOBs multiple times. I've held the lock+unlock buttons for up to a couple minutes. But I can't seem to get any response from the system.

I've been driving the car a bit over the past few weeks, and the battery is less than 2 years old. I even tired several hours after attaching the trickle charger on just to make sure it wasn't some battery issue. The charger shows everything good with the battery/charge--but no luck with the Fobs

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot further. I wouldn't be surprised if one had gone bad--but seems weird that both would break at the same time. Appreciate any suggestions...

Do that stuff above and also check the fob's PCB for broken/cold solder joints. This failure is common with C5 electronics.

Got this from an old post....HTH

I figured out the issue with the famous key fob problem of it loosing sync with the cars. Turns out it's a problem with one of the chips coming detached from the circuit board.

When you open the key fob with the board facing you, look near the top right hand corner. There's a rectangle shaped chip, check the prongs. I checked mines both times when each of my remotes wouldn't keep sync with the car, each time it was loose.

I resolder it or you can even use permanent glue between the chip & board to hold it firm if you're not comfortable with soldering. Make sure the prongs have a good connection. Sorry that I haven't taken any pics, but it's pretty much straight forward.

Thanks guys for the responses. Still no luck.

I tried the re-training again through the DIC. It just never responds and times out and exits after a few minutes of holding down the lock/unlock buttons. Tried with both Fobs I have; no luck.

I re-opened up the one fob I changed the battery on. Nothing looks or feels loose. Actually, it looks very clean inside.

I just ordered a new Fob off Amazon, and will give that a try. At only $15, it seemed like a cheap test.

Am I correct in assuming that if tire pressure monitor system still seems to be working fine, that it uses the same receiver and that receiver must be working?

Thanks again.

Will

New Fob arrived, and first attempts to connect have had no success. So, back at square one.

Well, I am at a loss. It is Saturday morning and I thought I would have some time to more thoroughly check this out. I go out to the car and for no particular reason tried the trunk button on one of the old Fobs--and it works. I try the lock, unlock -- yep, they work too. The other old Fob I have, yep it all works. No, I had not tried to reprogram anything yet this morning.

I decided to leave well enough alone and not try and program/train the new (now third) Fob I have.

Who knows what is going on. Tire monitoring has worked throughout--as far as I can tell. I'm going to leave it for now and will try and figure it out if/when it starts acting up again.

I know Einstein said the definition of crazy is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Well, trying the same thing over and over with no success, and then suddenly for no clear reason the exact same thing works -- that will drive you crazy.
