It's a history code related to the "PASS-Key Detection Circuit". Does anybody know what might have caused this to set? Could severe wheel hop cause it?
I am going through the same thing right now. You don't appear to be at the same stage I am though. I have this code and sometimes the car won't start. You put the key in, and turn ignition to start and nothing happens. If you turn the key to the on position you will notice the security light flashing, and won't be able to start the car for 3 minutes from when you first tried (which is the timeout on the BCM for reading the passkey). After waiting 3 minutes, the car will start every time. This problem is interrmitent for me, the first time it happened, then went away for a month. Now it happens 1 of 5 to 20 starts.
Here is an explanation from the service manual:
Description:
When you insert the key into the ignition, the key pellet is read for the valid resitance programmed into the BCM. If the proper resistance is found, the theft deterrent relay energizes, steering column unlocks, and the BCM sends a message to the PCM to deliver fuel. If the resistance from the pellet is not correct, this code sets.
Conditions for setting the code:
The voltage level sampled at the BCM passkey input circuit is high, signaling that an invalid passkey resistance was detected, and a short to voltage or an open circuit is present. The condition must be present for one second.
I have not been able to fix mine yet, have tried cleaning all the contacts, next I am going to check the BCM connections and the wiring. If I can't find a problem there, I will have to go to the dealer to have them replace the key cylinder or the BCM.
In my case both the keys act up, even though one of them gets very little use. I don't think it is possible for both key resistors to go bad simultaneously.
No it's from the resistor in your key starting to wear out. The car is having a hard time reading it.
That sounds logical in my case. I wouldn't put it past GM to make the resistor harder then the sensors in the key hole so they ware out faster. One of those guaranteed service deals for the dealers. :cuss
