Default what is this

I have the steering wheel off to replace the clock spring . I moved the tilt up and the little plastic piece fell out . I didn't see where it came from . It dropped under the tilt assembly . I have looked thru the service manual and see nothing in any of the diagrams .

Could it be a bump stop? Just guessing. Look where the tilt wheel stops when its in the fully tilted UP or DOWN and see if there should be something for it to rest against other than metal.

the range of motion seems to be the same before it fell out . It looks like there are small rubber stops for up and down limits . I have tried to fit into any space on the tilt assembly but it doesn't seem to belong anywhere . I have went thru the service manual and checked every diagram , just not seeing anything that looks like it .

Might be what Bill suggested. Being a production vehicle, maybe the guy or machine that installs them dropped/used 1 too many, and it took a long time to find its way out..

Looked through all the relevant diagrams in the parts manual for all the years between '97 and '02 -- no sign of anything that looks like that in the column or in the column mounts. Might have come from the inside of a sub-component.

I looked thru diagrams for the column and for the cluster and the dash , didn't see anything like it . When I get back to it , I am going to put the steering wheel back on and turn it lock to lock . If nothing else falls out and it feels normal it's going back together .
