Default What oil in rear diff?

Is there special oil that needs to be put in the rear diff when changing it? Can you only get it from the dealer or are there other places?

Thanks,
Chan

P.S. Part number's and/or brands would be great.

I'm gonna use Mobil 1 in my new differential. WCC shows GM Fluid at 75W90 I believe. Remember to add the anti-slip additive also.

AMSOIL Series 2000 75w90 Gear lube for me. No need to add the additive, it's in it.

I get flamed for recommending stock stuff but to risk all the good things in the C5 on Billy Bobs recommendations, not a chance. Darn metal just refuses to grow back.

You can go aftermarket, most auto parts stores will have 75W90 gear oil, and limited slip additive in little tubes. Noone's proven any harm from NOT using factory GM fluids in this case.

I have used both Amsoil 75W-90 and Mobil 1 (with GM additive), and I think both are excellent. GM did extensive research before coming up with their choice, so you can't go wrong with the stock synthetic either. Enjoy! :steering:

The P/N for GM Limited Slip Additive (4oz. bottle) is 1052358 - it'll run you around $6 or $7. Personally I use this in all my diffs along with Mobil1 75W-90 gear oil.

I'm changing mine out to Redline 75W90. It already has the limited slip additive in it. I emailed Redline and they gave me a list of dealers in my area. Otherwise you have to mail order. I'm changing to Redline because a few forum members say the differential runs quieter with it over stock stuff (I've got a slight noise at cruise), so for the cost of two quarts, I'm gonna give it a try. I'll post my results.

Amsoil here, very happy with it. Have also used Redline in the past. Be careful with the additive, best to call the tech line of the product you select as some won't mix with GM additive and some don't need it (Redline and Amsoil).

Also, love the color of your car

I used the GM additive with the amsoil and had no problems.

Here is info that I found, Its on my "how to" from the link above:

Amsoil and Redline claim that there fluids already have an additive in them. Amsoil says it both ways on there website:

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Gear Lube provides limited slip performance. Although generally not necessary, original equipment manufacturers' limited slip additives may be used in conjunction with AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Gear Lube.

Redline says:

LIMITED-SLIP COMPATIBILITY Red Line Gear Oils, with the exception of the 75W90NS, already contain friction modifier required for operation in limited-slip differentials. Additional additive is not required.

I have emailed Redline and asked them if it would not hurt to add the GM additive to Redline.

Here is the reply from redline

The 75W90 would be suitable for the limited slip in your Z06 it contains 5% friction modifier, typically what is needed to reduce the chatter from the limited slip when making a slow tight turn. Adding more friction modifier if it isn't needed reduces the lock up of the limited slip and reduces it's effectiveness, so I wouldn't add it unless it is needed due to chatter and then only just what is needed. The friction modifier isn't a lubricant but just an additive to make the fluid slipperier for chatter control. The 75W90 should be suitable right out of the bottle without the need for the additive. Thank you for your interest in Red Line Oil.
