Default Reverse light switch 2003 Vette

My reverse lights come on when I use the FOB but not when I shift from park to reverse. I was told that it is probably the reverse/neutral switch. I also viewed a You Tube video showing the replacement of the reverse control switch which is mounted on the transmission. The reverse/neutral switch is entirely different from the reverse switch on the transmission. I don’t think it is the reverse/neutral switch since the car starts in park and neutral. I’m looking for anyone that has had this happen to them.

All I have are Manual C5/C6 Vettes. I know for a fact that that switch is located ON the passengers side of the transmission on NM6/NM12 transmissions. The schematic provided states its located in the PNS Switch on pins C1 and C (I cany make out the number) . There are two connectors on the PNS Switch. One could be for that function.

It may start in park and neutral (mine does), but that doesn't mean it is operating the reverse lights (like you, my reverse lights work with fob, not in reverse). I bought a new, genuine GM switch that I'm going to install. Switch is on the drivers side of the A4 cars. A new switch may not fix it, but I figured, hey, it's 24 years old, and new OEM C5 parts wont get more plentiful, so I grabbed one while they were still available. Not much money, $50? I'll post when I eventually get it installed....

Examine the two connectors on the PNS Switch. The reverse lamp wires are Grey and Brown. If you jumper those together, the reverse lights should come on (key in ON)
They will be on connector C1 on pins C and (i believe ) pin F. The schematic that Im looking at is a little bit blury.

Default Reverse light. Issue

Thanks for your input. I did buy the reverse switch GM part #14069600. $18.00. I’m not sure if this part fits an automatic transmission. One other thing that I forgot to check is the fuse located on the passenger side floor. I currently don’t have the ability to get under the car unless I take it to the dealer and they want over $350.00 just to diagnose. I’m hoping it just the fuse. Your reply was very helpful.

The Manual Reverse switch looks like a temperature sensor and it has a small ball bearing in the end that screws into the manual transmission housing. If you depress the ball bearing, it completes the circuit inside the switch part of the sensor.
The A4 PNS Switch is located on the drivers side of the trans and the shift cable connects to it. Its a bolt on black plastic module about the size of a pack of cigarettes with two connectors. .

Thanks, I’m a bit confused between the PNS switch and the reverse switch and which one actually is for the automatic transmission. The GM part # is 14069600 is what I have. The PNS switch is totally different from the one I have. Love my Vette but it does present some challenges it keep it in great shape.

Bill did a great job detailing which one you need in the pics. You need the PNS switch in the pic Bill posted in post #8. The black plastic one. $18 for a PNS switch tells me you either bought the threaded one that screws into the trans, or you got a mighty cheap Chinesium PNS switch. Best of luck to you.....

I have the manual trans switch. If anyone wants it I’d be happy to send it. Looks like I will need the PNS switch. More diligent work on my part before selecting a part.. lessons learned. Your reply told me what I need to do. Thanks

if you plan on keeping the car for a while you might want to invest in a set of ramps, low profile jack and jack stands.

Check out QUICK JACKS. I wish I had a Quick Jack back in the day. There a little on the expensive side BUT, If you plan on keeping your cars, working on them to save money and get the job done right, They are a very wise investment!

Most definitely get a lift of some sort. Either the quick jack or a two post lift. Back in 2009, a 2 post in my state (Michigan) cost $1,600.00. When I wanted to pull my engine, and put in a new LS7, the company that did the install wanted $1,000 to remove the old engine and $1,000 to install the new one. To me, I saved $400, and the lift I have has never given me a problem. Not one. When I moved, I removed it and took it to the garage I have now. Best thing automotive that I've ever bought......Except my C5, of course!!

On my trucks that those connectors have some sort of goo to seal them up. The plugs will not simply pull out, you'll need to heat them with a heat gun until the plugs finally relent. If not you'll just ruin stuff.

YES,,, The twO connectors on the A4 Transmission PNS Switch have some sort of sealing glue that MUST be softened with a heat gun or you risk breaking the connector , the switch or BOTH!
