Default Second to 3rd shift

Hello everyone to keep it short, I use to own a 2005 Mustang GT and could dump the clutch and power shift through every gear with zero grinding or issue. While I understand a 2002 Z06 is a different car with the transmission in a different spot, also being a six speed, I’m wondering if I’m experiencing user error, or mechanical malfunction?

when I engage first, it is perfect. When I shift to second, it is perfect.

When under any circumstances however, if I disengage the clutch and move the shifter from 2nd to 3rd too quick, I will be locked out of 3rd and hear a god awful grind. However if I wait a second for the RPM’s to drop when going from 2-3, it will engage just perfectly. I can move the shifter into 3rd and be on my merry way. My concern is this takes what feels about 1.5 seconds. Maybe more like 1 whole second, when I know I could be shifting faster.

also I can downshift into 3rd under any circumstances, take 3rd up to 100 and back down to under 10mph, and experience no issues.

my question is am I an idiot? Is this how the car is? 2-3 shift is really just that slow? Or is there a way to be faster without grinding it? Or is it mechanically messed up somehow? As stated before, every gear works perfectly except the circumstance of moving the stick into 3rd too quickly. I either need to wait a second when upshifting, or rev march exactly when downshifting. Any ideas? I’m more so just curious, I do not plan to have this fixed. Just looking for general ideas. Also I drive the car everyday. Bought with 27,000 now has 35,000 within a year.

Not an idiot!! Sounds like either the synchronizers are shot, or the shfter needs adjustment. Unfortunately, I'm guessing it's internal, and the synchronizer's are worn out. I have an A4, so hopefully a 6 speed guy will chime in shortly. In my '69 4 speed, when it did this it was the syncs.......

Good question to ask here... Sorta requires experience driving "the other" to understand fully the nature of "the shift"....
