So I have a new to me, abused by someone else C5. It was a gift of sorts as my file couldn't take the work on.
So Friday I try to put the gear shift into 1. It instantly slides back into 2 so I pull it down again, a little more forcefully but it won't exactly stay. So I drive a little further and try to go up to 3 and then D. I instantly know something's wrong so I drive to my driveway and turn the car off. It won't come back on, it's not in Park.
The shifter cable is still attached at the shifter as I've already fixed that once. It's still attached at the transmission as someone(I think a transmission shop) rigged the cable with a bolt or two.
I can't move it to P or R by hand although I've read it 100 times. Is it bc the cables still attached? So remove the bolt(s) from the lever then it should work? Then I'd have to do the whole remove tube cove and run a new cable? I'd need a new lever obviously as they rigged it up.
I'm considering if possible getting it in R and getting the car in the garage and getting under and doing it myself. Is this recommended? A lift seems damn near necessary.
Remove the nut and cable at the transmission and you should be able to manually move the lever. Then get the correct bushing......should be the same as my C6 when it crapped out
Thanks. I'll take the cable off tomorrow and should be able to get it in the garage. If the shifter is moving the cable anymore theres about zero chance I don't need to run a new cable, huh? I'd love to avoid it but I'm sure it was overdue a long time ago. Again, thanks for your advice, I was surely overthinking it.
You probably have the cable popped off at the shifter end. This is very common. Be gentle with moving the shifter end of the cable. Bending it up too much and it will snap and you will need to replace it.
