I have heard it on occasion. Usually the knock sensors will pull out the timing unless something is wrong. I believe there was also a new PCM flash you could get, but if I remember correctly there was a noticable degradation in performance afterwards.

:iagree: But the degradation was really only with A4's. I had my M6 '02's PCM flashed for this at the beginning of last year and it only helped a bit. What cured it was running some 100 octane gas through. I've since added h/c/headers and no problem to date.
i hadthe same pinging after the installation of my magnuson{ not before}. i just sent my pcm to be tuned and today found that the timing from the programmer was causing most of the knock. there is also an issue with the furl trims that will be addressed. hope you get it figured out. :steering:
My '01 has this problem in hot weather now that the oil companies in CA has switched from 92 to 91 octane. I never had the problem with 92. Since it has been a chilly 82 degrees here lately it has not been a problem. When summer rolls around I will consider having the computer update installed. I did not do it last summer because I feared the performance loss mentioned above.
I got some typical knock while on a dyno several months ago. Knock retard kicked in and hp dropped sharply by 15hp. then very slowly recovered. I figure I can afford to give 2-3 hp if I can avoid the huge knock retard hit.
I have not heard any confirmation from anyone that the update reduces power but I would like to have some one with LS1 edit back up my existing program before I have the update installed... Just in case. ;)
It isn't your car, it is your gasoline. You are running too low of an octane gas. The gas is exploding on its own before the spark plug fires. Buying 100 octane gas would be a waste of money - just buy the octane rating required. If you are, then the gas station may be cheating you - selling you regular, when they label it premium. This is not an unheard of concept.
I had the same pinging in my 02 M6. Dealership told me there was a bulletin out on the Knock Sensors. It corrected the problem but came back after about 2 months.
Re: 02 A4 Pinging during Acceleration. (MAGRED 02)
When you live in some states its not as EZ as going to Sunnoco down the block for some Ultra 94.All we have to choose from out West is 91 andI would doubt that # as well.Adding 5 gallons of 100 to a tank in summer mos. will help and in colder mos.3-4 gallons should get you by.
Ideally with the A4 you want 93,the pinging is more of an annoyance to "drivers" than anything dangerous to your motor.See some of the posts they had about 8-12 months ago about making octane booster. At Xtreme we dont recomend it and thats from reliable sources. My 99 a4 Vert was sold for the pinging problem it was to overwhelming for me.Dave S.
I experienced the same in my 2002 MN6. I switched to Sunoco 94 with a bottle of Turbo 108 from Autobarn ($2.99) with each tankful and no further problems.
One more quick note on this topic. My 02 uses very little oil. Yet I looked in the cylinder with an articulating boroscope and found more carbon then I would have expected. You may also want to consider the GM upper cylinder treatment to see if that helps at all.
