You have probably done this plenty of times before so some advice would be cool
My starter is hanging up on the bendix every now and then so time for a new one.
Ive read as many posts as I can find and see the exhaust (stock in my case) has to come down.
Looks pretty fresh under there for a 2001 C5 so think the manifold nuts will come off.
I see the fasteners on the bell housing have to come off and the spring hanger at the rear..
My question is can I just lower the front of the exhaust to get the starter out or have I gotta drop the whole lot?
Also are the manifold gasket rings reusable?
Are you talking about the donuts where the manifold meets the mid-pipe? If so yes. If you're talking about the manifold to head gaskets, then ish. If graphite then I wouldn't bother. If MLS sometimes you can get away with it, bit replacements are relatively cheap.
as for just unbolting the front part of the mid pipe, i dont see why not. I would not let it hang unsupported though, those pipes are not light.

Thanks Vox… yes it’s the mid pipe to manifold donut. It got some spares so will use those..
yes I was banking on dropping the system just enough to get that starter out. And then supporting it
Been there... 🤨Are you sure the starter is the problem? Double check your premise.
I am thinking it’s the starter as when it fires up I get a “zing” sound a split second later.
sounds like the starter star wheel not disengaging quickly. What else could it be?

Got some audio of this weird noise after cold start up. its about 8 seconds in and sounds like a grating noise.
Maybe the starter not disengaging correctly?

It's the starter drive or bendix as some people call it, you should be able to just drop the pipes enough to snake the starter out.
Thanks for that Martinez...im coming to the same conclusion as its getting worse!
I think the starter motor is dying of old age.
Up on jacks right now and new starter at the ready👍
Let us know if the starter takes care of that noise.
I think its fixed! I replaced the starter and no more noise.
Finished bolting up the H pipe yesterday and tested multiple times and all good!
Replaced this......
With this....
I added some heat insulation to the wiring as it gets hot in there..
Was I lucky with the manifold studs or what.. no major corrosion
Thanks again guys for your help and as ever this forum rocks!!
Your Welcome, it's not to hard to replace a starter. The manifold studs can be a real pain if they are corroded glad to hear you didn't have to deal with that.

Depending on where weslp00 purchased that AC Delco starter he may need to return the core for a deposit. IMHO If there's a warranty on the new/rebuilt one I'd rather have the core $$ back rather than pay to have the old one rebuilt just to have it around as a spare.

I'd replace the starter as the OEM starter uses 2 different bolt lengths into the block which has resulted in the starter ear cracking on the block. GM later changed the starter design.
Well returning that core just aint gonna happen.
I bought it outright from Rock Auto and im in London England!
It would cost me more to send it back than the purchase price...
I might just tear it down for a rebuild
I am one of those people who think that most people who post on this site are from the USA, and yes it's not as easy as simply going down to the local auto parts store when you live in other countries.
