Re: WTF?!?!?!? My Motor is PINGING??? Why? (RskyBns)
I notice that you have a 2001 coupe like I do. I don't want to worry you but your complaints are a "carbon" copy of what I experienced and mine turned out to be an oil consumption problem. I believe Amoco Premium here is 93 octane. They replaced the rings and while it was torn apart they showed me the pistons. They were so badly carboned up that GM okayed replacing them.
Do you have black soot on the tailpipes? Has the DIC warning for low oil ever tripped?

Believe it or not, higher octane fuel will increase the likelihood of carbon build up.
As stated earlier, check into oil use or other causes (air leaks, sensors, computer, etc.). The only thing higher octane can buy you is the ability to run more advanced timing and higher compression. Higher octane fuel contains less energy than lower octane fuel: use the lowest octane fuel you can to prevent pinging on a properly running engine. Many times higher octane is recommended to band-aid some other problem (which ultimately gets worse).

Good luck on getting it fixed right.

Yea, I have been coming to the conclusion that this is what my problem is especially since the dealer thinks it needs a Decarbon....And yes, consistently black tailpipes, and yes oil level trips regularly. Now trying to get them to do the TSB is the difficult part.

Hi all,
I have done the decarb process that C5 TECH posted, through the PCV intake. It is very easy to do and does make a difference, in my opinion. I had some serious carbon chunks shooting out of my rear-end. (get your mind outta the gutter :D ) I KNOW it did smooth out my idle, as I could hear the difference before and after. I used two cans of GM T.E.C to do the process and it cost peanuts. I would recommend at least trying this as an initial step. JMHO
