Put on your flamesuit on this one! Oil is like religeon to some people!
Gear oil or engine oil?
I switched to Redline in my MN6 and differential.. I perhaps noticed a slight improvment in shifter smoothness - nothing dramatic. When I do it again, I'll probably go with Mobil1 or Amsoil - only because they have had their products qualified -- Redline has not (although they claim they do meet the specs, but have not bothered to officially qualify it)
I used to use Redline Oil in my C4 and developed a number of oil leaks. I have used it in my C5 but the cost and the availableability makes me stick with Moble One. I do use the Fuel Injection Treatment by Redline quite often which works pretty good in reformulated fuel here in Calif. When its time to change my rear-end fluid and trans fluid, I will use Redlines Products...
Redline, from what I have seen in the oil analysis reports, is a good oil. As stated above, it is not API certified (if you care about that). However, from the oil analysis reports I have seen Amsoil does as well if not better (this is the 5W-30 or 10W-30 Amsoil, not the Series 2000) and is much cheaper then Redline.
The new Mobil-1 is getting much better analysis reports then the previous Tri-Synthetic oil. However, I can't find the 5 quart jugs anymore and if you buy the Amsoil by the case of four gallon jugs, it is a few pennies more then Mobil-1 in quarts off the shelf.
Couple of other notes. Mobil-1 is rather low in the 30 weight range at high temperature, whereas Amsoil and Redline are near the higher end of the range. Also, Amsoil 5W-30 and 10W-30 are not API certified to SL since they have more ZDDP then allowed. Since this is an anti-wear additive, I haven't been overly concerned about this myself.
Just an other convinced user of all the RED LINE HighPerformance Lubrication Poducts - from Bumper to Bumper. Exchange of ALL the fillings once a year - including Engine Oil Filter (UPF44).
Consider : as being installed in Switzerland, you imagine supply is a li'l more complicated as living in the continental US. BUT : only one thing what counts => none of the ways is either too difficult or too far when I wanted to have the very Best of the Best. And, even the price (including all shipping and import taxes) is really fair, compared to other so-called hightech-products on the common user-market here around !!
Sorry for, but EXXON is definitely too arrogant - they give us here only one choice for viscosity : OW - 40 !! Their comment about this sounds real nice : "......goe's for everything". No, thanks, 0W is NOT foreseen for the LS1 / LS6 engines - this is kind of watersoup.......sorry.
RED LINE Lubrication Products are Polyol Ester Base Stocks - NOT Hydro Carbon based as many of the others synthetics => Dyno-Oil.
Of course I am aware, OIL IS religion. Now, start the Flame-Burner..... :blueangel:
Nothing but Redline 5W-30 in the Vette & the TrailBlazer! Even Redline D4 ATF tranny fluid, Gear Oil & Power Steering fluid in the Vette!!!! Love the stuff. :yesnod:
Red Line makes the very best products and there's plenty of info out there to back it up regardless of anybody says. Amsoil puts out a really good product as well. The only stuff I'll use is Red Line or Amsoil.

I changed to Redline from Mobil 1 because one of the claims from Redline was that your engine will run a little cooler. After the change I drove from Chicago to Cape Cod for a wedding and drove non-stop back to Chicago. My oil temp and engine temp was exactly the same as with the Mobil 1. At my next change I went back to Mobil 1. Just don't like claims the aren't true in my case.
Have been using Redline in my Trans Am and have been very happy with it. It is a little hard to find. Royal Purple is available at the AutoParts store near my house, so Im switching to that next time. today actually
Anyone know where the best (cheapest) place to get Red line on the net is?
Any forum venders have good prices on it?
I found the following site to have the best prices. I purchased a case of 10w 30 for the vette from them last year, I cannot remember the amount but I called them and they gave me a quantity discount. You might want to give them a call and check em out  http://www.myoilshop.com
Didn't realize Mobil One was so bad. I guess I must have been lucky over the last 30 years. Interesting expierment, there are 310 people in this work place and I asked each one what they thought of Red Line and not one person ever heard of it. Basically that a bothers me, not that they aren't car buffs but that one would think that if it was that good someone would have heard. Most knew of Amsoil and Mobil One. Conclusion: Should I discount GM for being stupid and switch or should I go with this thread, of which I'm sure all are Chemists and know much better or is this a bunch of egos saying how much more they know then GM........

Re: Red Line oil? (Flyin'Brian)
We are a Redline oil distributor at LG Motorsports. I totally believe in this product.
We have used RedLine oils in my race cars exclusively. It has saved my engine many times. We broke an oil pump belt, at 8000 rpms at one race. Even though I shut it down as fast as I could, we expected the engine to be junk inside. when we opened it up, the bearings were perfect.
Extreme heat, or failures like above are when you will need a real oil, and that is when you will be glad that you have RedLine.
We will also match any advertised price for Redline products.

Uh, actually neither. Each person here is going to put what they feel is best in their car. Some will base this decision on input from the forum. I prefer to look at test data. The Mobil-1 Tri-syn that just left the market was not a very good synthetic oil. The new replacement Supersyn is much improved and approaches the Mobil-1 of old. At least that is what early test results are now showing. I did a lot of research before I selected my oil. Oil analysis is providing the data I wanted to see to keep using the oil. I don't profess to be an expert, but there is more to an oil then popularity and one must weight thier own decisions accordingly. I am sure there was more to the selection of Mobil-1 by GM then just technical information, especially since many of the European oils (even Mobil-1) are better the we can buy here. That is "part" of the reason that BMW gets $10 per quart for Castrol. It is a superior synthetic oil that is not available here in the states. Redline is actually a very good oil, whether it is worth the extra cost is something every person here must weight and decide. Their base is more expensive then Mobil-1, but unless you are going with extended drain intervals (not every 3K miles), the benefits of some of these expensive oils may just simply go down the drain.
