That's just my replacement for the stock black plastic cap. The cap houses the internals that the shaft rides on, the internals I use are bigger and take up more space, there is enough room to open up the back end of the box but the front end needs a new cap with more room.
I agree with @Tusc plenty of variation between cars and it really doesn't matter how low the mileage is or how babied the car was, the factory internals are rubber and they don't last 20 years. Nobody has a good condition stock box in their car anymore, they just think it's in good condition because they haven't upgraded yet.

Yeah the rubber mounting bushings were aged on my box, nothing too crazy. Even with the 25 yr old wore out box, the shifter I put in completely changed things for the better. After getting the forward and rear stops on the new shifter adjusted it became amazing.
A day will come when I need some garage time and I’ll put in the billet box for the full new shifter effect.
I’ve got a few other bugs to work out before embarking on that.
Brand new cam pos sensor junk out of box is my focus as of now. It was a “while you’re in there” part when doing a clutch, driveline, and balancer job.
