Default Cold Air Intake

Hello C5ers.
I looked under the hood of my 1997 C5 and found that I have a Black Wing SLP Cold Air Intake that was disconnected. I had no Check Engine Light or anything. I reconnected the Intake and now my Check Engine Light is on. I went to the DIC and it gave me Codes P0171 & P0172. I looked those up and it states Right and Left Lean Conditions. How harmful is this to my car and can any of you C5 Gurus explain to me (in layman terms) what that is and why it became problematic when i reconnected the Cold Air Intake? Also, what do i need to do to get it repaired? Costly?

Thanks C5Gray

Blackwing is just a filter that clamps onto the MAF isn't it?
It was disconnected? How was it disconnected? Like, no filter on it at all?

The extention from the Throttle Body down to the Filter had dislodged. I just reconnected the filter to the extension coming from the MAF

With no filter dirt is getting sucked into the engine and at least maybe clogging up the MAF and Throttle Body and who knows how
much more dirt into the entire engine. I would never drive without an air filter

Is the filter itself clean? Since it was run without, it would be a worthwhile endeavor to hit the MAF with some cleaner and go from there.

The MAF has tiny little wires that connect from one wire to the other. Considering the fact that they are that
thin indicates the smallest amount of dirt on them could cause problems. The throttle body isn't that far back
beyond that. If it gets dirty, the flap wont open freely causing it to get hung up. I've taken both out of the air bridge
and sprayed a cleaner made for that specific reason. Even with a good air filter that can cause loss of power. You can feel the improvement right away if cleaned. Aside from that you are letting dirt into the entire engine that may cause permanent problems.
It could be like having your oil changed and leave the old filter on.
