It looks like my diff is leaking from the drain plug if I’m not mistaken. The car has been down for a long time I was finally able to get the car cammed and installed a new trans, converter, cooler, and I 3.42 diff from a manual car. I also changed both seals where the axles go and made sure they were flush. Had the car idling multiple times after filling up all fluids. Finally was able to get the car on the ground and test drive it and seen the diff started leaking about halfway down the road. I didn’t realize it until I got back home but I drove less than 10 miles. Got back home and seen the fluid trail and looked to find the gear oil dripping from the rear cradle some was on the exhaust and rear tub I guess from the air driving. Simple as replacing the plug or washer? Anything else in that area to look at?
There IS a seal washer. NEVER use plumbers tape on the drain plug.
Yes, replace the sealing washer and I believe torque value for the plug is 26 ft.lbs.
Are we talking about the square plug on the bottom of diff?? i've never had a seal washer. 25yrs its the same as the trans plug. Just wonder why there isn't a washer on the trans plug and that doenst leak. I though its the same kind of plug.
Is that tag the seal??? Mine don't have that tag. Just tape. Never had a leak. Strange.
Is your car an AUTO? If so, the 3.42 came from a manual car right? If both of those are true, did the auto plate (forget the name of the part) from the torque tube side of the older auto diff get moved over to the 3.42? If not, that will make for some leaking.

That picture shows the fill plug, the tag is under the head of the plug, the seal behind that.
But, the drain plug on the bottom of the diff housing is identical to that fill plug on the back side of the diff housing, it is a straight threaded allen head plug and it uses the same seal.
It is not a pipe thread square head plug like might be found on some older car.
You can see both plugs in the diff fluid change video I did on my car.
