Default performance mods help

my 98 vette is starting to bore me so i thought i'd hop it up a bit, i already have a blackwing and smooth flow ducts. i eventually plan to go with the z06 manifold with a matching head and cam package. my questions are...do i need to replace my stock maf with a z06 maf ,and if so what brand or should i just have the stock ported and polished. along with that do i need a bigger throttle body and if so what size. and my big question is what exhaust, there are so many, they sound cool but which one provides the best performance?
any help would be great i'm a freshman mod guy.

The performance gain from a catback exhaust is not worth considering. You are mainly upgrading for sound and appearance.

Long tube headers will get you a decent gain in power and this is a much better mod if you are looking for power.

I’m not that familiar with the 98 MAF, but my guess is that it is not worth upgrading. The stock TB should also be fine. Save your money and go straight to the cam, intake, and heads. A good cam, intake, and headers are the best bang for your buck on an ls1.

I also have a 98 Vette and I recently did the mods you are thinking about doing. You do not have to replace you MAF or go to a ported throttle body. Spend the money on another mod that you might need.

You did not mention if you have an A4 or an M6, if you have an A4 I would install a T/C and at least 3.42 gears before doing heads and cam.

I agree with Quick Silver a catback is mostly for sound and looks.

98 A4
Donaldson Blackwing
Cartek Stage 2 Heads
Cartek M Cam
LS6 Intake
TPIS Headers
Underdrive Pulley
Comp Push Rods
Rev 1116 Valve Springs
Borla Exhaust
LS1 edit Tuning
172 t.stat
ST3500
3.73 Gears
B&M Trans Cooler
Hurst Line Lock

hey thanks for the help, i was planning to get some lingenfelter long tube headers, high flow cats, crossover and obviosly a exhaust. i guess i forgot to mention this before. i also heard that if you get the z06 manifold, ported heads/cam package you need to get a z06 maf. this was coming from a ricer though... my 98 is an m6 other things in the future included a underdrive pulley and maybe a better clutch and brake system.

I agree with the other members about bolton mods. I have installed most of them, and I have seen quite a lot of improvement. Cams, Gears, heads, and Long tube headers are a sure bet. These improvements are keepers and provide much more hp.
The boltons are for people like myself, that only want to bump up the gains in hp to match the existing engineering. Price is a factor also. I do not drag my vette a lot, but I do enjoy the hp when I want it.
When your mind is made up just how serious you want to get into the hp race versus the money issue, you will not have a problem finding the answers to your questions on this forum. Plenty of American Gearheads with a bunch of hands-on knowledge.
In parting, was stated that a stock Maf will flow up to 500 hp, and you probably would'nt need a larger throttlebody until heads and cams.
Good luck!

There was a post on the Blackwing shroud earlier. Maybe search for it. It was within the last week so.

thanks for all the advise, from checking around the forum it sounds as though the mafs are a waste of money and the throttle body should be saved for later, do the long tube headers attach right before the cats, and are those high flow cats worth anything. what is the stock radiator rated up too.

I love the corsa catback, i have flp's headers, x-pipe and off road pipes...The car sounds almost stock at idle, but when it's over 2k rpm whatch out..it startes to become alive..at full throttle i make heads turn....I love my complete exhaust....I did my set up at speed demon, they are the best...It took them a day to do everything....The corsa took about an hour....good luck
