James,
I'm very interested in doing this (I'm the one that Jason_Smith mentioned in his post) as I have an 02 vert that is A4 right now but would like it to be M6. Only problem is I'm in Chicago, but Jason is the vette mechanic at the dealership here and he's willing to do the work it sounds like :) . Let me know if you want to consider....
If memory serves me correctly, QWKAZEL is paraplegic. Friendly as heck and tarnation to.
Yes, you are correct. I am a para and have to use hand controls that connect to the pedals (gas-brake). I don't have a ZO6, I was just wondering if it could be done if I decided to go that route, money really isn't an issue. Thanks for all of the responses. :seeya
NO automatic will ever have the MPH a 6-speed does despite a TQ converter & gears, unless you have a stroker motor
if i had the shifting talent and a chance to do it all over again, i would choose a 6-speed
Rob, that is just it. . .we don't have the shifting talent or we would be driving professionally. Also, how many times will you get your A4 up to top speed? I know that I will never see my A4's top end. As for the 1/4 mi. the A4 is the best choice for a heavily modded car! My .02 cents.

i have done a buck 70 with my 3:42s. with my 3:73s i dont dare go past 160

I've seen 172 in my current setup.

Why? Just curious? My first thought would be just too much stress on the gears at that speed.....
If two cars have the same gearing then the 6 speed will obviously be capable of achieving a higher top speed. Why? If gearing was the same in an A4 vs. a M6 then when the A4 would be hitting a rev limiter in 4th gear the M6 would still have two OD gears left. I assume that is the logic.
That being said, the A4 typically isn't geared like the M6. If you take an A4 coupe, it will have a higher top end speed than a M6 Z06. Gears are much taller. That in mind, there is a trade off in quickness vs. top end speed. In my case, I will never have a reason to go faster than I will run in the 1/4 mi. and I would be willing to sacrifice top end for quicker acceleration.
If I had it to do over again, I would probably purchase a vert. However, I would certainly stick with the A4 if I wanted to race.
Actually most high stall converters are not very efficient and the top speed even in the 1/4 mile will usually be a bit less then an M6 (same thing on a chassis dyno). Unless you lock the converter, which is pretty hard on the puny lockup clutch unless you have one of those 5 disk vigs..
Its a shame, I can drive a M6 just as well as anyone in the 1/4 but the only way to get a decent 60' with an M6 car is to rev it untill it bounces off the rev limiter and sidestep the clutch :) Loads of fun until something lets go and replacing clutches in a C5 is no picnic.. The M6 wont hold up long powershifting every weekend either. Even though some guys have had luck with certain clutches and their trans lasts a while something will break eventually. I see no need to be a 'he man' about it on a dragstrip when autos are much easier on parts, consistant and usually much easier to get a decent ET/60'. Our old race car ran 7.25@196 with an air shifted powerglide, cant get more wuss then that :)
On the other hand, everytime I drive this car on mountain roads like the 'dragon' around here I wish I had an M6. Driving a high stall/horsepower car through a lot of turns with no real manual control of the trans is just plain silly and gets old real quick :)
I like the feeling of being in control and 'connected' as the next guy but both have their place. I will say if all I could have was a bone stock M6 or A4 C5 there is no way I would pick the A4 car
Yes you are :yesnod: Automatics don't have a clutch pedal but they do have a shift lever so you can select the gear yourself. While you may find it fun to work three pedals with two feet, in some forms of road racing like Formula 1; electronically shifted transmissions have replaced manually shifted ones because of their consistency and they are less of a distraction when setting up for a corner.
That was sarcasm btw.... :D
I understand how an auto works.
The F1 cars do not have automatics. they have Semiautomatic sequential electronically controlled transmissions.
They are not as much for consistency as for milisecond shifts that would be not humanly possible with a traditional clutch setup.
The corvette A4 is not a semiautomatic sequential electronically controlled transmission so you are talking apples and oranges here.

In my opinion (and I am sure you will not agree) it does not belong in a sports car....period.
[/FLAME SUIT]
In a drag car where consistency is everything sure....auto is great.
Please remember this is JUST AN OPINION
:iagree: Also F1 still uses a clutch to get the car moving. My Corvette and my daily will have clutch at least as long as F1 does.
QwikAzel I always liked the screen name wish I could fit it on a license plate ;) :jester
