Hi I noticed when I turn off the ignition the engine shutters and kinda rattles.
This seem to occurs after a hot shut down. I don't notice this when cool.
Any idea what the cause?
Re: engine rattle when turning off the ignition (slxrti)
you might be experiencing "dieseling" <sp?> this happens when the octane of the fuel in not correct, i.e, high enough, try filling up at a different station.

i
:iagree: Also called engine run on, not a good thing, try better fuel!
Re: engine rattle when turning off the ignition (slxrti)
It is normal if you baby the car around and not bring it up in the rpm's,you will notice it. My cure is to run the car up in the rpm's every once in a while and it will not do it. Ok I lied I bring the rpms up every chance I get :D
Re: engine rattle when turning off the ignition (Beltrami)
Modern fuel injected vehicles should not be capable of dieseling, since the fuel is shut off when you turn the key. With a carbureted engine you can get dieseling since the fuel in the carb float bowl can still be sucked into the motor.
Re: engine rattle when turning off the ignition (Duck916)
Its NOT dieseling but has alot to do with the dampening springs in the clutch disc. When the enging shuts down the engine stops firing and the pistons are slowed down by compression. When the engine spins down to a very slow speed the crank shaft will start to hunt between compression and vacuum in the cylinders and cause the dampening springs in the clutch disc to go from fully loaded in one direction to fully loaded in the opposite direction.
That my theory! :D Ive tried every technique known to man to figure it out and YES pushing in the clutch will HELP eliminate the noise. If anybody else has a theory lets hear it. It happens in my 98 and 02 ZO6.

I have a similar noise. I thought it was the bearings in the drive-shaft (are there any?) I noticed it doesn't make the noise if I shut down with the clutch pedal pressed in. Pretty noisey though.

I have some noise when I turn off the car too.. Thought it might be something loose thats kinda what is sounds like...I will try pressin the clutch and see if thats it.. Nothing to worry about I guess right?
Re: engine rattle when turning off the ignition (DSTJ99)
Very common, just press in the clutch (put the gear selector in 1st or Rev...I use Rev) and then turn the ignition off...wait a second and then release the clutch.
Re: engine rattle when turning off the ignition (slxrti)
I noticed the same thing. I will have to try using the clutch also. Another thing I noticed is the clutch is very loud. If I am sitting idle and I just press in the clutch and let it go, there is a loud sound (I think it is just the flywheel spinning up, but I just got my car Sunday and wanna be sure).
I must say, I love my 03 Vette alot more then my 02 Acura I traded in

It is an amazing vehicle :flag
Its the throwout bearing making that noise. It will quiet down with more miles. Just press in the clutch and hold it in while you turn off the ignition and the rattle will go away.
