I know this is going to be a dumb question, but what is the easiest way to know what gears you have? Also, can someone tell me what happens to highway MPG with different gear setups?
If your car still has the gears that came from the factory look at the door of your glove box. Look at the numbers on the door and see if you have G92 if you see G92 you have 3.15 gears if you don't see it you have 2.73s.
You can also tell by your MPH at 70 MPH in O/D.
If you are turning less than 1950 RPM at 70 in O/D you have 2.73s.
The 2.73 is actually a faster car on top end and will take the corvette up to 174 mph. The other gear ratios like 3.15 and lower is used in a drag racing 1/4 mile applications. The car(equipped with a lower gearing) is now limited to how fast it can actually reach and will require more gas consumption and more engine wear (RPMs) to get there. Its like riding a bike in low gear down hill; You have to peddle like hell to catch up with the wheels. Hope this helps.

i just did 170 last week. Yes, my RPMs were high but i think comparing a stock 3:42 and a stock 2:73 unless your racing at speeds over 150 mph the 3:42's or 3:73's will pull harder. maybe 4:10's or 3:90's will run out of breath against 2:73's but i think that will be only at extremely high speeds. i myself having experienced 3:15's, 3:42's, and 3:73's feel that all c5's should have came stock with 3:42's. i took 3:42's at speeds up to 175 with no problem
My guess is that your engine was screaming. If you had 2.73 you would be breaking 200 mph. But why split hairs..Each gearing has its purpose. The 2.73 is more efficient at high speeds and the 3.15 is quicker off the line. What you want is what you get! A car that does a lot of highway driving is better with the 2.73, and the car that likes to short race is better off with 3.15.

Please tell me that you understand that you would need some incredible horsepower to push a 2.73 over 200mph. I doubt that the stock LS1 has enough to push a 2.73 much over 170mph and it won't be because you are hitting the rev limiter.
Mitch i did find the G92 down in that list of about 40 code numbers on the glove box door. Is that where i should have found it? If so, then looks like i have the 3.15s. Am glad it's not the 2.73s. I like having some decent low end/acceleration. It's amazing how much difference it makes turning the traction control off. With it turned on the hole shot is mild with little spinning. With it turned off i can light up the tires nicely. I even have to ease of a bit to let it grab. I can see where even lower gears would make this thing go like a slingshot.
I will probably stick with the 3.15s since my drag racing days are pretty much behind me. Although there is a deep temptation to blow off punks at the stop light. I guess i still have some kid in me.
The other day some kid in a Camero Z28 was screwing with me. It sounded good, but i didn't want to get arrested on the main drag. It made me wonder if he would have blown my doors off. Any thoughts?
