Default High Octane Gas & Engine Damage

Read a post on the Impala SS Bulletin Board that said using a higher octane gasoline than called for in owners manual will cause engine damage & carbon build up, since engine is calibrated for a specific octane rating. Any truth to this??

I don't think so. Using to low an octane may damage the engine.

Using too high an octane may mean less power because some gas is displaced with anti-knock additives.

It may damage your wallet, though! :D

Not true, the higher the octane the smoother and slower the gas burns. Except for some AV gas most high octance is leaded racing fuel that will clog up the CATS. If your engine is not designed to take advantage of anything over 98 then it is wasted money.

The only damage from using too high an octane would be to your wallet. (Unless you used a leaded racing fuel, as noted above. That will kill your cats right away.)
