Default Hust shifter install complete

Thanks to the many CF forum members for all the install instructions and hints as well as what to expect from a performance standpoint.

Here are a few details that may be of interest.

1) Someone advised changing out to the lighter outside springs before starting the install to reduce the risk of dropping things into the tranny well. Good advise. ( Inner springs are already the lighter variety when you recieve the shifter)

2) Demon Key removal was easy using the method suggested here. Used a needle nose like medium/small vice grip clamped on the driver/passenger side of the key. Lodged a large screwdriver above the key between the jaws and used a hammer to tap upward as someone else wiggled the vice grips a little from side to side. After 5 or 6 taps out it came right out.

3) I took the stop screws completely out as many have recommended in order to prevent the risk of later rattling against these stops. So far so good.

4) To guard against additional noise I re-used the rubber tunnel cover from the original shifter with the opening pushed out the other way as many have recommended. To fill in the approx 2+ inch round opening I went with a toilet flapper rubber mechanism as someone mentioned. i.e. the gizmo in the bottom of the toilet tank with the chain that connects to the flusher handle. Just trim to fit and drill/puncture a hole in the middle. I added within this a type of dense pipe rap of about 1.5" in diameter x 1.5" long that fit inside the lower bulb portion for further insulating capabilities. Once this was slid over the hurst shifter I used duct tape to unite it to the rubber tunnel cover from the original shofter. This prevented any gaps from occuring when the gears where shifted. On top of this I installed a 6" x 9" piece of material, with a hole punched in the middle, from a wool car wash mit for further insulation and tucked it all around the boot opening in the console. Then the boot goes on top and then added the MGW shift **** and it seems more quiet than it was stock.

I have initially found it a little stiff, even with the lighter springs but the nice short presice shifts are amazing. I will leave it for a few weeks, as many have suggested and if it still seems too stiff I will adjust further or perhaps take out a spring or two.

Definately a worthwhile mod. This combined with the new 4" quad GHL's give the Vette a whole new personality. Thanks for the advice.

I had bought the toilet flapper some time back to add to mine but removed the shifter before I ever got to try it. I may re-install this summer after the caravan with an MGW **** to try it again.

I would try it again. Just work on the insulation aspects to keep things as quiet as stock and work the spring adjustments and combinations to get it to feel right. The precision in the short shifts is such a good feel.

In a couple of weeks it will loosen up a bit.
