The Consumer Reports test of oil filters (around 1980 I think) showed that the Fram had the best filtration and dirt holding (amount) performance.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the M1 filters down to 5 micron and the standard Fram is like 25 micron, wouldn't the additional filtering of the M1 add resistance to oil flow.

Probably. At least that's the current thinking among some of the more filter obsessed over there (Patman :D ). There is some question as to whether there is a need for the micron levels of filtration provided by high efficiency filters when that level is smaller than the tolerances of the engines the filter is installed on - particularly if the flow rate drops.
I still wouldn't use a Fram on anything regardless of filtering capabilities or micron rating. Their build quality is junk, and you can get filters twice as good for half the price.
Actually, believe it or not, one of the favored filters on the other forum is turning out to be the Wal Mart brand. Good build quality and filtering. Used oil reports appear to support as well. For now, I am sticking with the UPF-44. The final reports of this test will be very interesting. The trade-off appears to be filtering ability vs. flow. What started it was a used oil analysis on the same motor comparing a Fram and dino to Mobil-1 filter and synthetic. The analysis showed the dino and Fram protected the engine better which was a surprise. As they started looking into it. the flow through the Mobil-1 filter due to it's low first pass particle size became suspect and the thought was the filter was by-passing more oil then the Fram so in effect the Fram filtered better simply because more oil was actually passing through the filter media. Interesting stuff, we'll see where it leads us in the end.
