Re: Hurst Spring Swap (skidmarc)
Yes it can be done without removing the console, but it depends on whether or not you re-used your black rubber boot when the original swap was done. If the black rubber boot was re-used then you're gonna have to remove the console. Don't worry, it's not as bad as it may sound. Find out by carefully un-hooking the shift boot and look underneath.
When you say "tranny noise" are you talking about a rattling or buzzing sound coming from the shift ****? This has been a problem for some people and not for others. If you have your stock shift ****, try removing it and putting some "removeable" Loc-Tite on the threads and re-secure it. Make sure too that your key is in good and snug (don't get too carried away on that thing though). If that doesn't do it then you may have to go with an aftermarket ****. I'm using a billet **** and have no problems with noise.
Hope that helps.
I used a black rubber toilet flapper that someone else had suggested in combination with the stock tunnel cover with the throat reversed to point upward. Drill a hole in the middle of the flapper, trim it to the size of the throat opening and push it on over the shifter. It will slide down with the bulb potion fitting into the throat of the tunnel cover. I further put some pipe wrap ton the bulb portion to insute noise further. Use duct tape to hold the flapper and the throat of the tunnel cover together to maintain a full seal. I put a layer of insulation over this in the form a old lambs wool wash mit with the elastic portion removed and slit open to form a rectangle piece. Drilled a whole in the middle and slid this over the shifter and tucked the material around the console opening. Added the stock boot over this with the center portion around the shifter pushed in to allow a cup to form to take up the now excess material. I used a MGW **** to finish it off. With this set up it is just as quite as stock. Good luck.
Ha...thanks for the post.....I was able to remove boot no problem by pushing it inward...however I saw this post afterwards.....so I saw what you meant about the stock boot......oh well I took the console out in a matter of minutes...all was well until.......see my other posts on dropping adj screw in trans tunnel....lol
Now I mind as well seek out a toilet flapper or dyno mat or something to quiet it up before re-intstalling hurst!(gotta throw stock back in till I can order more screws/springs from Hurst/Mr Gasket! Unless you think Home Depot or car parts store would have em?
