My '98 Cpe is scheduled to back to the shop for the fourth time in four months for an annoying engine squeel/squeek. Shop has replaced idler pulley, tensioner pulley and the front pulley that had the service bulletin.
VERY ANNOYING - Sounds like a damn Ford.
Anybody else have similar? :cuss
Thanks Guys. After posting this I went to the garage and listened thru a plastic tube as best I could. It sounds loudest at the water pump. That's the big one in the center at the top with the dome looking front. Has anybody had to replace the H2O pump?
Just cleaned my belt with no residue spray cleaner and light electrical cleaner with lube.....was chirping and clicking all the way home today. All is well now :yesnod:
I've been hearing a squealing sound on my 98 when you first start it up. It seems to go away after a few miles. I was just getting ready to go outside and take my belt off and turn some things and see what I can find.
Mine's driving me crazy too, really more embarrassing! Doesn't chirp when cold but one warm it's like cricket city. If I put in in neutral (A4) it will stop but otherwise it's terrible. My AC is dead also, the compressor clutch works but no charge left, I'm hoping that MAYBE once the system is charged the compressor will have....Oh who am I kidding... :nonod:
I took the main belt off last night and spun everything in that with the exception of the AC clutch. I ruled out the compressor clutch because the squeaking doesn't change reguardless of whether the compressor is spinning or not. I guess I need to take that belt off also and see if either one of those 2 idler pulleys feel bad. I would hate to find this the hard way.
I may have originated this thread but by God I'm glad to know that some folks cant live with a hood "full of crickets". For cryin' out loud ( no pun intended) GM, what's up? The last time I heard a Viper it didnt have a peepsqueek chirping under the hood! IT IS VERY EMBARRASING! MY FRIGGIN 'VETTE SQUEEKS LIKE A TWICE SOLD TAURUS! DAAAAMMMNNN! IT"S A HARD THING TO LIVE WITH! I think I'll take a good anti-depressant and call it a night....
The belt and all but the water pump and the AC clutch have been replaced.
I'm talking less than 600 miles ago. The GD squeeking keeps coming on...
I WILL UNLOAD THE DAMN THING IF I CANT SIT AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND
AND NOT BE EMBARRASED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
ok - the zoloft is kickin' in... ooo i feel betterrr - now where were we??? oh yeah - the silly squeeling thing. dang , i plumb forgot about it til now. i do know that what really helps my "condition" is when i get the 'vette singing at about 120 and then i roll up the windows and can hear the stereo- now that is livin' !! :D :D :D
Keith, I dont know if this would work, but I've heard about it in the past. For squeaky belts use a standard soap bar on the belts. Obviously be careful of moving parts. Good luck
I had the same problem, tried several different belts and still had the noise. I put a goodyear gatorback on 2 weeks ago and the noise is gone.
:iagree:
Yup, had the same annoying, embarassing  problem and did everything/replaced everything. Finally the 'Gatorback' belt did the trick. About $30 + DIY install.
