I have a couple of questions about oil consumption and what you can do about it. I bought my 2000 coupe with 31,000 miles about 2 months ago and it goes through about 1 quart of oil every 750 miles. I drive it every day like a normal car. I don't think I drive it too hard. :D
Anyway, what is the best way diagnose the problem?
Typically, what do people do to fix it?
What damage could this cause to my engine?
Lastly, if the fix involves tearing the engine apart, this might be a cost effective time for some engine mods. Like??????
Any help you guts can provide is much appreciated.
Re: Help - Oil consumption problem. Excuse for mods? (2000TicketMachine)
Oil burning is covered under warranty. Do a search, this subject has been covered to death is why you are not getting any replies. I got all my mods done by my dealer during my re-ring. It is a great time to mod!

CJ. What kind of mods? I know heads & cam are a popular combo. Will the work to fix the oil problem have the engine apart where I would save $$$ by doing the mods then?
Re: Help - Oil consumption problem. Excuse for mods? (2000TicketMachine)
I just had mine re-ringed. Since they have the engine apart, it would be a good time to do the heads and cam if the dealership is cool. You will probably have to do a oil consumption test before the dealership changes your piston rings. I had to do two  I thought about doing the heads and cam during the fix but didn't have the $$. Plus I want to do it myself :D
Re: Help - Oil consumption problem. Excuse for mods? (2000TicketMachine)
You will need to go to the Dealership and have an oil comsumtion test performed. ONce the test is complete, they will schedule you for shop time to fix the problem. The engine will be removed and the piston rings will be replaced. After that is all finished you can break in the engine and then mod away!!
Re: Help - Oil consumption problem. Excuse for mods? (2000TicketMachine)
I supplied the parts, heads, cam, headers, pulley, chain, clutch. The dealer installed them DURING the re-ring for $500 labor. The re-ring was lotherwise free under warranty, so that the total I paid to have all this intalled was $500. See my signature for all the details of the stuff they put on.
Re: Help - Oil consumption problem. Excuse for mods? (CJS)
Food for thought.
I have found, and many on other boards, that the oil consumption can be reduced with an oil other then Mobil-1. Amsoil has a very low Noack number and I recently changed my Suburban over to it (has the famous 350 smoke on start-up). My consumption has dropped quite a bit. Before tearing things apart, especially since your consumption is not as extreme as others have reported, I would try a different oil prior to more radical solutions. (Sorry, but to me having the dealer take my motor apart and put in rings is "radical" :yesnod: )
