I had a friend call this evening, he's fresh off the golf course and he's got the dreaded "Service Column Lock" message - and it is in fact locked, not just malfunctioning in the "open" position as sometimes also happens.
So I tell him well, you can try the yank it back and forth trick while turning the key on & off, and then I thought, hell, nothing to lose Don, try pulling the #25 footwell fuse, because that will reset the body-control computer that controls the lock - worth a shot.
He pulled the fuse, waited 15 secs, inserted fuse, started car - and drove it home. Message gone, and the steering lock functioned as it should! :hurray:
My take-away is that this failure is not always mechanical - it can also be a computer glitch, for whatever reason.
Just an interesting data point for y'all to file away.
Re: Column Lock - an intersting event... (thevettenet CA)
My wife's vette is at the shop right now with the same thing. It's had the dealer column lock recall fix. It has the COH column lock bypass installed. It suddenly started saying column lock even though the column is not locked, and it won't go. Pulling fuse 25 and fuse 29 worked once but not again. If I unhook the battery and wait 30 minutes, it will sometimes reset it. Sometimes it just resets itself. The wife got tired of it, so it's off to the corvette specialist.
