Hopefully I can get a few hundred responses back on this to help make my desicion. What is the best header for the money and performance? CLARIFICATION (BBP) should be BPP (breathless performance) my fault
Depends on what exhaust you are going to go with. The intermediate pipe is a pain in the butt. Personally, I would either do
1) FLP headers and aftermarket exhaust
2) Stainless works headers and Stainless Works 3" exhaust
3) TPIS headers and exhaust that comes with intermediate pipe (ie: Corsa Titanium)
The current LGM headers are just too expensive for me.
The new LGM headers are going to be less expensive but still yeild the same results. I would wait for those.
Phillip
Phillip - do you have any idea how much less? I think Lou could sell huge #s if they're in the range of FLP etc. It will definitely raise the bar! :yesnod:
joel
I have LGM LTubes. :steering:
I have the SLP's, but I voted for the Stainless Works. They're pretty much the same price, almost the same performance, quality stainless, and substantially less than FLP's or LGM's. The FLP's and LGM's are WAY overpriced in my book. Quality pieces I'm sure, but ridiculously expensive (These are HEADERS, not HEADS!!!).
I would have voted for SLP's if they weren't such a pain to install.

Re: Headers poll (RC)
We sell a combo now with our LG Longtubes, with Merge collectors with a 3" x pipe and no cats right now for $1895. Or you can buy just the headers alone for $1595. Very inexpensive hp and great low end torque.
Some people, who are not Corvette people, think that the Corvette is also ridiculously expensive. It is all relative, and guided by what you want.
Plus, in 100 years, a few hundred bucks here or there won't matter

Compare apples to apples.
Take the SW headers, buy 2 hi flow cats, buy 2 offroad pipes and the 4 quick change clamps to quickly swap between the two, then buy an X-pipe, and see if you've spent less than $1600, which is what the FLP system costs that comes with everything named above.
Also add the cost of welding labor to connect the headers to your cats, and add that cost again if you ever want to return your car back to stock when you sell it.

You are right, once you get Stainless Works headers and Xpipe that runs from the collectors back to your 2-bolt flange from the mufflers you will be in the same price range as FLPs. However you will have a product that is 100% 304 Stainless Steel, not coated mild steel, that comes with a lifetime warranty from a company that does all of its production in house so there are no 3 month delays on defective products shipped out.
Stainless Works 3" xpipes are $799 with Random Tech Cats and $350 without. There is also a savings if you buy their headers and Xpipe at the same time.
I have LGM LT's. They are very pricey, but, as Lou mentioned, so is the Corvette. In the performance arena, you get what you pay for. New research & developement, cost $$...and they are now trying to make their product more available dollar wise. I say give 'em credit for stepping out there, with a superior product. Somebody's on the move over there, cause now in addition to their header product, they're offering that new G5X-2 cam!
Bottom line=because of companies like this, we don't have to use an unimproved, aged product from the past.
If you just want to save money, there are plenty of alternatives. Depends on what your objective is... ;)
First of all, I am not trying to start a vendor/header war. I was simply answering the question presented. Both LG and SW make beautiful, quality products.
The original question was, "What is the best header for the money and performance?". My answer: Stainless Works.
Let me compare "apples to apples". Lou states in this post that you can just buy the headers alone (the original question) for $1595. Matt states that SW headers can be purchased for $799 (which is half the price...I thought they were a bit more than this personally). Let's add welding... both installation and removal. I just paid $30 for welding (times 2= $60). I still stick by my answer that SW's are the best header for the money.
I would like to address the statement that Lou made.
"Some people, who are not Corvette people, think that the Corvette is also ridiculously expensive. It is all relative, and guided by what you want.
I've owned a Corvette for 3 1/2 years. I have never thought that the Corvette was ridiculously expensive. I think a loaded Suburban that is the same price of more than my Corvette is ridiculously expensive. I just think spending $1500 on one set of headers is ridiculously expensive. So what you're saying Lou, is just because I am not someone who has succombed to the belief that I should happily pay over twice the amount for anything that is meant for a Corvette, that I'm not a Corvette person?!?
Your product looks very nice, possibly easy to install, and I'm sure helps horsepower/torque. I would never criticize any of these qualities without first-hand experience and proof. Nor would I personally criticize you without knowing or dealing with you. Please do not criticize me (as "a non-Corvette person") simply because I feel your product is overpriced... which is what the original question asked.
Stainless Works headers....799
LG motorsports headers....1895
Being beaten in the finals by one car length and loosing 2k in cash....priceless

With all due respect, it probably is time to back off and not start a war as you mentioned. As I read through the posts, you made the first stab and used the term "ridiculously expensive" with respect to Lou's product (and one other). Lou's LT headers are certainly at the high end, but that is a combination of the quality materials used as well as the fact that they are not mass produced and therefore build cost is much higher. Lou is addressing this by having his headers manufactured for him (to his specs and standards) in the very near future. Prices should drop when they are available.
I don't mean to throw gas on the fire, but I know Lou and he is a stand up guy who truly cares about the products he puts out on the market.
