Default Which Coolant to Use

I just saw a consumer alert concerning DEXCOOL coolant. I guess this stuff is causing rust and eating up water pumps. I also understand from the alert that there is a class action suit going on against GM at this time. Of course GM stands behind there product and if another type of coolant is used it will void your warrentee. What is a person to Do

I use Prestone's DEXCOOL coolant. Where did you see the consumer alert concerning Dexcool? I haven't heard anything about it. Now you got me worried :D

Where is this "alert"? The only one I've seen related to rust was for situations where people ran with low coolant in iron blocks. The rust would build up in the empty passages and then was washed into the coolant when the coolant level was returned to normal.

I don't hink this applies to a well an aluminum block.

In my opinion, Dexcool is much maligned but is in actuallity a very good coolant. Most people are basing decisions on rumor. The following two references address much of this rumor. I wouldn't use anything else, and have in fact changed over my green to Dexcool in all my other cars with no problem.

PS: The last information I had from GM was that the Prestone coolant (orange) doesn't meet the GM specification.

Just use DISTILLED water AND PRE-MIX it before you pour it in, and you won't have any problems (this assumes you didn't flush the system with water, which is really what causes corrosion). That's why I change coolant often, so I don't have to flush the system. Oh, and you don't have to use 'dexcool'; just a 'dexcool' approved, which most long-life coolants out there are. You can see the 'dexcool' logo in the front label.
I personally like the Havoline long-life, as it's the only one (I know of) with no silicates, phosphates, borates, and nitrates. I use it for my BMW bike, and will use it for the vette when it's time to change it.
