Default Another Oil question

How much is the normal amount of oil you need to add between oil changes? It seems like I need to top it off to much. What Mobil 1 oil do most of you use 5w30 10w30 or the 15w50 raceing type?

I usually don't have to add any oil between changes(every 6 mos.). I use the 5W-30 year around, although I think the 10W-30 would also work fine.

Not using Mobil-1, volatility and in range viscosity are my concerns. What year is your car?

I'm adding about a quart every 2000 miles. It sucks, but it's better than allowing my local Chevy Dealership to re-ring the engine. :nono:

My Y2K FRC goes 3-5000 mile between oil changes and I have never had to add any. I must be one of the lucky ones. :yesnod:

Welcome to the Forum! GM says that 1 quart in 1500 miles is acceptable. (to them) I don't have to add any, as a rule, unless I have been doing some prolonged high speed runs. Then I may add a pint. You should not have to add any between changes, as far as I am concerned. Stick with the 5W-30 weight that GM recommends, as it flows better and protects as well any any other grade. Start keeping records to show Mr. Goodwrench....... :cuss

1998 Coupe with 63,000 miles, use Mobil 1 5W-30, UPF44 Oil Filter, change oil at 3% left DIC (6600 miles), use NO OIL between changes, doesn't even move off full mark !

Going to put on my flame suit since this comment is counter to most forum beliefs, however Mobil-1 barely makes it into the 30 weight range. It is very close to a 20 weight oil. The volutility is also higher then some other oils on the market.

Just a suggestion, try a switch to Amsoil and see if your consumption is reduced. I recently switched several cars to this oil from Mobil-1 and found an overall reduction in oil consumed, especially in my Suburban. The volutility is much lower then Mobil-1 and the viscosity is near the upper end of the 30 weight range. For the cost, it is worth the experiment to see if this helps.

I don't work for Amsoil, don't sell it or am in any way affiliated with it, I have just been finding through my own experience and research that you consumption may be reduced compared to Mobil-1.

OK, flame suit is on :steering:

Would using something other than Mobile 1 void warrany? Has anyone heard of GM stepping up to the plate and fixing this under it's warranty? :skep:

Take your car back to your dealer and ask to get on their oil consumption monitoring program. If you're going through enough oil, they will re-ring under warranty.

Good luck!

BTW, before the H/C install, I would need a quart about every 3000 miles or so. Wasn't a big deal because I get the oil changed at around 3000 miles or so anyways.

Using AMSOIL 0W-30 and Delco UPF-44 filters and don't have to add any between 5k oil changes.

I use Redline 5w30 and change it every 3000 miles and never have to add any oil. I did have the dealer replace pistons and rings with the LS6 coated piston and ring package, but I had no consumption issues before or after.

'00 FRC, no oil used between 3k changes (I check weekly). I use Mobil 1 5w/30 full synthetic as recommended.
