Re: Torque Converter Lockup Problem (ToplessTexan)
I have a stock trans with stock converter and have the same
problem. It seems that the converter unlocks and sets
the P1870 code. I clear the code and everything is fine.
The dealer installed a new transmission under warranty.
And it's still setting the P1870 code? That's two stock
transmissions and stock coverters in a row. It's hard to believe
that both transmissions are defective. I've also confirmed that
the fluid level is top off.
The only thing that has changed recently is that
I had the car programmed for firmer shifts, and higher
shifts points. Could this possibly be the problem. Could
shift firmness be too aggressive? Never had any issues before
the recent programming.
By the way, mine usually sets the code and becomes unlocked
at highway speeds.
Iv'e driven the car on at highway speeds. I stilll get the P1870 code but only in the speed range of 60 - 65 mph. Anything over 65 and anything less than 60 and I'm fine - no codes and no TCC lockup problems. I am fairly convinced that my TCC lockup issues were due to the brake switch adjustment and now all that is left is the P1870 code which is probably due to programming issues because of going from stock to a 3000 stall converter. I encourage anyone that is experiencing a TCC lockup problem to look at the brake switch adjustment. There are 2 switches behind the brake pedal that controls the cruise control cut-out, brake lights and TCC disengagenment. Make sure that both switches are positioned so that the plunger on the switches are fully depressed with no down-force on the pedal. If the switches are not adjusted properly, any slight bump in the road can cause the TCC to disengage as well as the cruise control.
Glad to see the switch adjustment helped the problem. Now you are basically at the same point I am, except we have the P1870 code at differnent speeds. I have found that I set the code around 50mph, which is the speed I have programmed to lockup the TCC in 4th gear. Before I made this programming change and just used the the LS1Edit default scaling for the 342 gear change, I got the P1870 code around 35mph.
As long as I don't cruise at around 50mph much, I can usually go a week without setting the code. My computer won't be back until late this week so I can't AutoTap more until then.
I don't know if the problem is due to some compatability issue between the Yank & FLP tranny or if it is an actual problem with the TC. When I talked to Chuck about the the code problem, he said it is quite common with the Yank TC. He said that is why he doesn't sell/reccomend them.
I would like to find out if the indicated slip is a rear problem that we need to be concurned about. I guess the only to find out is pull out the Yank & put something else in. But that's a big expense I don't want.
