Default Piston Slap Revisited

Is piston slap a thing of the past with the new Vetts? I had an '01 that was so embarassing on cold starts I sold the car. Also, are there any other problems associated with the '03's like oil burning with the 6 spds. etc.

Uh...no. Welcome to the world of performance engines. They get loud. The LT1, LS1, LS6, etc. all have piston slap. It has yet to cause any actual damage.

FWIW, I have a 2003 Coupe MN6 with 8K miles. The engine is turbine quiet and with 4500 miles since my last oil change (DIC shows 38% oil life remaining), the dipstick shows no oil consumption. According to reports I've seen elsewhere, GM revised the pistons for the 2003 model year and coated them with a polymer. However, I also have seen reports on various forums that piston slap might not show up until the motor has 15K or more miles on it. I expect next winter will tell the tale.

My late production 2001 does not have any piston slap. It is my understanding the polymer coated pistons went into production engines around April 2001. It uses a little oil, but it's not excessive.

Get this--my wife just got a Lexus SC430. Nice car and all, but the manual states oil consumption up to 1 liter per 1000KM is OK! That's more that a quart per 600 miles!

Burning oil and piston slap are not normal. These problems can still occur: it's a quality control issue. As stated above, the new piston/ring designs should reduce the probability of their occurance.

New pistons - April 01
New rings - LS1 3rd week of 2002 production
LS6 start of 2002 production

My car is whisper quiet, no problems at all.

By the way, piston noise with Mobil-1 seems to be more prevelant, I know I will take some heat for this statement, but I am on a lot of boards and it is a common theme.

And I thought I had a rod knock.I was going to go back to the dealer and give him hell.I thought they would have solved these types problems.Mine is a 99 I have it about a month now and every morning it sounds like a rod wants to let loose. When I want to hear piston slap I could start my blown 540 in my 77.

i have a 2003 with 2600 mi. , no oil consumption but i do have some piston slap at cold startup. it is gone in a minute. a little side info-i also have the marble sound in the drivetrain. i did my 500mi breakin, changed oil at 500 mi. and just changed it again at 2500. i just ignore all the noises and drive it. the car runs great
