My friend bought a low mileage 02 he has had it for only 1600 miles and it used 2 qt all ready. The dealer says a quart every 2k is normal. Why?
Here is what I think is happening. Your mileage may vary. :)
Because the Vette uses skinny oil and low resistance rings. When they get it right it's magic with low resistance rings that seal well. If they get it just a little wrong you have an oil burner.
Have him put a few 1000 more miles on it and if the problem persists and if it still has a warranty have the dealer do an oil consumption test. If the car fails they will do a leak down test and possibly replace the rings.
Re: how much oil should a 2002 use? (Richin Chicago)
I have an 02 and just finished an 8000 mile trip and used less than half a quart. I change according to cars computer and never had to add yet. I have 40k on car and in for 3rd oil change.
2 quarts on a '02 sounds like alot, depending of course upon driving conditions, etc. The '01s had a well documented oil consumption problem - is your friend absoluely sure he bought an '02?
My '02 uses a little, but I beat the crap out of it.
Take it to the dealership and have them perform the oil consumption test..most likely they will do a RE-RING under warranty. It is documented for all C5's. They even changed the intake valley in 01. Your covered just take it in and you will be fine.
