First off, I do realize this has been brought up over and over, I just have one question.
This started last week. Pull Key, wait 10 seconds followed by serivce column lock. I cleaned the key which seemed to work (for like a day  ) and then switched to my second key thinking there may be a problem with the chip since the column lock was almost always preceeded by 'pull key'. It has gotten worse. I'm having to pull the key like 4-5 times and pull clockwise on the steering wheel to get it unlocked. I'm pretty sure the CL mechanism has been replaced under the recall by the previous owner but I will run the VIN by the dealer to make sure.
Question is: Will a column lock bypass (from Corvettes of Houston) get rid of the problem? I'm not so sure since it is almost always preceeded by the pull key message which would indicate a problem with the ignition switch. I don't want to blow $100 and still get the pull key message all the time.
Well, in talking with GM, it appears that the colum lock mechanism was replaced by the previous owner in November of '00. The recall campain didn't start until September '01 so there is probably around a 50% chance I could get the recall done again for free. Is it worth messing with or should I just get the CLB or take the 'wait and see' approach and hope for this $20 solution?
The CLB will give you peace of mind that it'll never happen again. I'm glad I did mine...even after the recall repair, the problem still can rear it's head again.
