My windshield wipers have a mind of their own. Without touching the column stark they turn on all by themselves. Once this happens I can't shut them off. They will stay on until they decide to shut off. All this happens with the column stark in the off position. Do I have a short somewhere in the steering column? It is becoming very weird and annoying! I know by taking it to the dealer it will not act up and they will think I am nuts! :mad
I had the same problem just the other day on my 98!
I did all of the difficult troubleshooting using my 02 Z as the parts doner car!
I swapped out the switch and that proved good! The motor was next!
When I removed the cowaling, I found the well that the wiper motor resides in to be full of water! :cuss The motor has a electronics board in it and it was submerged!!!!! :cuss :cuss
I opened it up, dried everything out and it seems to be working OK for now!
The cause of the problem is, there are three drains in that well. They were ALL pluged up with tree crap. Check your drains. If they are full of trash, your motor is probably flooded. Reach up under the fire wall area in the engine compartment where the wiper motor resides and you will find 3 black drain utters. If they are pluged solid with junk, you have found your problem and you need to remove the motor/wiper arm assembly.
Take it out, rip the black box off of it, (three screws) flush it with brake parts cleaner and dry it out under a heat lamp. That should take care of the problem.

Bill,
Thanks for all your help. I did check the bladders and all of them were dry and no debris. I suspect some kind of short at the stark or in the steering column. I dread going to the dealer!
I hate to admit this, but on the infrequent occasion that I actually need to use my windshield wipers, I forget that they're on the other side of the steering column than on my truck and I end up turning my lights on.
