The DIC in my '00 FRC is on da blink. Its funky. There are no DEAD pixels, but the pixels are not as bright as they should be and are inconsistent. Such as, if I've got the total milage selected, some pixels are bright as they are supposed to be, some are not. Its a mixed batch. And the same pixel that is acting up on that particular selection, may not act up on a different selection, such as Tire Pressure or something.
It was out of warranty day 2 of ownership. Got 50K miles on it now. :(
so unless I go buy an extended warranty from a mod friendly dealership, its not an option.
I think it is a flouresent display. Just like any flouresent tube, it will wear out with usage. That's why I have mine "off"... it only comes on for occasional checks and to tell me "Traction Active" ;) .
I don't know if it is a "servicable" part. Good luck... hope the repair goes well!
This type of display uses an X-Y, either common cathode or common anode matrix with a tiny ribbon type connector for each segment. These ribbon cables generally are glued onto the glass substrate with the conductors held in place by pressure.
If the ribbon cable comes disconnected partially then only certain segments will illuminate. It is just like an LCD watch display.
If that is your problem, what can you do? Replace it, I've tried several times to repair these types of displays (not HUD) and never been successful.
The HUD looks to be just this type of unit.
If you tear into it shoot some pics for the gallery...
