I have read many posts about the hurst shifter and the problems with the rattles. Has this changed? I was thinking about getting one but reading about all these stories, I'm not sure I want to deal with it. Input anyone??
Re: Hurst shifter, should I install one??? (SLICKMAN)
A definite YES! Just wrap some teflon tape on the threads before re-installing the shift ***. Shorter shifts, shorter shifter, more positive shifts. After about a year I now would not be without it. YES! Do it you'll enjoy the difference.

The rattles can be dealt with. The stock shifter sucks IMHO. My vote is yes.
I love mine. :D
:iagree: :iagree:
The stock shifter was not to my liking. Too tall and too mushy. There was no feel to it. I've got a Kirban, but would get a hurst in a second. The adjustable springs are a great feature.

no rattles here,I put a MGW **** on w/setscrew,apparently its not the shifter but the loose fit between the shaft& shift **** threads ,teflon tape should take care of the problem. :lurk:

My opinion is that you are dealing with luck of the draw. I think the Hurst shifter is fairly well made, but if you get a tranny that was prone to rattle in the first place, the Hurst will amplify that rattle like crazy.
I got burned. I've tried everything. Mine is down to a dull roar and I unconsciously jab, wiggle, and nudge my shifter all the time driving down the road to find a quiet sweet spot in any gear under 5th. For some reason, except under acceleration, 5th and 6th are quiet, which makes it tolerable - just barely.
Re: Hurst shifter, should I install one??? (SLICKMAN)
Nope, not unless you like noise and vibration. My Hurst had plenty of these with the stock **** and the MGW. I removed the Hurst and went back to stock with the MGW **** all the way down.
I tried lead weights, teflon tape and all the "fixes" but the only way to get rid of the irritating tranny noise was to go back to the GM shifter.
I liked the precision of the Hurst, but am only willing to go back when Hurst figures out a way to dampen -- not amplify the vibration in the transmission.
Re: Hurst shifter, should I install one??? (SLICKMAN)
I had a Hurst in my Camaro, it always seemed tight. It is a nice shifter though. On my C5 I tried something different. I cut 1 1/2 off the shifter, then threaded it down to the fat part of the shaft. Also had to trim the boot a little. I sprayed some teflon on the shifter rod part that goes into the tranny. It shifts like butter, has a shorter throw, plus it's even shorter then the Hurst. It's easy and it's FREE. I added an aftermarket shift ****. Looks awesome with a stubby shifter, plus more comfortable to shift.
Good Luck !! :smash:
P.S. No Rattles
