What do you mean it has turned into an Oil Burner. Did this happen recently, last oil change, or did this message come out of the blue. Did you check your oil with the dip stick. What does it say. I have a 2000 and I do not burn any at all, even when I do some spirited driving.
I assume this is a stock car, correct? You need to keep track of how much oil it uses and in how many miles. Do you drive the car hard at all?
On my stroker motor, I burn about 1 quart every thousand miles or so.   I'm used to check my oil every other weekend and pour in a quart.
My '00 has turned into an oil burner. Even though I recently had a chnage, my HUD is saying low oil. What type of oil is the best for me to put in?
At the risk of starting another oil choice thread, the best choice for a stock motor is 5w-30 synthetic, such as Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, royal purple, etc.
Thanks for the input. To give you an idea of "oil burner" I do a lot of driving. After each oil change, 750 miles later, it is always running low and HUD always says low oil.

How much oil are you putting in at the oil change? Mine takes 7 quarts to show full after I have driven it a few miles.
Stick with Mobil 5W 0r 10W 30.
I use 10W30 because my car is never going to see 0F start up.
You need to baseline you oil level first. Check it in the morning before you start or you can get erratic readings and it will look like it's down and it won't be. Make sure it is full to start with.
I am sure this will start a flame war, but I will put it out there anyway. Mobil-1 has a rather low Noack volutility and it also on the very bottom of the 30 weight scale at 100 degrees C. You might want to switch to another oil that has better Noack numbers and a higher viscosity at 100 degrees C (but still a 30 weight). I would try a change with Amsoil 5W-30 or 10W-30 to see if it helps. I found this helped quite a bit on my Suburban when I changed from Mobil-1 to Amsoil last year.
OK, flame suit is on and now hiding under computer desk
Vettenuts is totally right, I know most of you will use nothing but Mobil 1, but truth be told it's not the best choice for the LS1. From what I have observed in looking at oil analysis results with this engine, it likes a slightly thicker oil that's closer to the top end of the 30wt scale. Mobil 1 is at the bottom end, it's almost a 5w20 actually. And if you drive hard and see oil temps above 225 or so, guess what, that oil is going to be dangerously thin.
Both Amsoil and Redline 5w30 would be the better choice, both are thicker and your consumption will be less and engine wear will be lower. Vettenuts posted his oil analysis using 5w30 Amsoil and it showed excellent results, much better than any Mobil 1 oil analysis in the LS1.
Mobil 1 has the potential to be a better oil, being such a large company with many knowledgable chemists, but in order to keep profits higher, they choose to cut some corners. Smaller companies like Redline or Amsoil don't have these problems, and they can make formulation changes much quicker too. Just because Mobil 1 has secured the OEM contract with GM for the LS1/LS6 engines doesn't mean it's the best oil to use in it.
But don't take my word for it, do an oil analysis on your oil and see for yourself.
