Comparing a Blackwing to a Vararam is like comparing an Air handler Filter to a Trane Air Conditioner Unit.
The Blackwing is NOT an intake mod.. It a Filter plain and simple. No different than hanging a K&N Cone filter on the end of your airbridge..
The Vararam is a complete Air Intake system designed to increase air velocity and pressure as the car speed increases.. Oh..And it does filter the air along the way... :D
I replaced a Vortex with the Vararam and had a Noticable gain!! I could only imagine what going from a Blackwing would be like... night and day.... ;)

Exactly!
And the faster your car is going the better it is going to work.

Exactly, and the filtering ability of the Vararam filter (or lack of) may be a goodly portion of the performance gain.
:withstupid: Sometimes I think Donaldson is the only company actually concerned with the quality of the air that some people shove through their prize winning Vettes. All you ever hear is HP, HP, HP... Why doesn't anyone EVER ask how well the FILTER WORKS? I'll sacrifice a tenth of a second if it means prolonging my enjoyment. I love my big honkin blue filter because I know I'm protected. To each his own. :flag

K&N has a bad rap too.. However I put 210,000 hard and fast miles on a Nissan with a K&N Cone filter. It was on for every mile... DOes not burn a drop of oil...YOu'd think I would have ingested enough sand by now to wear out my cylinder walls.. nope...
I upgraded from the blackwing to a vararam. The #1 reason I did this is because I had very high IAT temps with the donaldson. I cannot claim any ET gains from it because I've done too many other things at the same time.

You should have cut a small slit in the shroud. I did and dropped 20-25 degrees, to outside ambient temp.

How high were your IAT with the Donaldson Blackwing?
