I changed the plugs in my 98 (@ 60,000 miles) and used the origional rapid fires. They work fine for a non moded engine. I checked all of my wires with an OHM meter prior to reinstalling them and 6 of them read 320-360 ohms. The other two read 2-3 MEG OHMs :cuss :mad . I did alot of investigation prior to a wire purchase and chose the Magnecore wires. Reading their wire write ups may have solved one of my engine problems. For the past year I have been getting weird one time codes on the DIC. I can clear then and most of them nevre repeat. I moved the two bad wires away from the ECM and the codes have just about stopped happening. BAD wires cause BAD things to happen on a LS1/LS6!!
I have decided to purchase the MAGNECORE Compention 8mm wires. They retain the origional heat shields and many forum members like and recommended them. They were $60.84 + $4. shipping. (They came on Wednesday :hurray: ) I ordered them from the magnecore website. It was cheaper that way. The local ricer shop wanted $90.00 for them.
I have to get them in SOON so I can take the car to Carlisle PA!!
I replaced mine with Magnecore's! But MSD and Taylor both have good wires you can use. I think the Bosch +4's are not a very good plugs, I use the NGK TR 55's with good results. But I have heard on the forum LAPD pushes the Iridiums, so I am sure they are also a fine plug. :yesnod:
I had the Magnecors but they wouldn't fit my setup, I needed a longer wire. Bought the MSD universal 8.5's and cut them to fit. Plugs are NGK TR55's, a copper, hotter plug than irridium or platinum, and best for nitrous. The downside is they will wear out sooner, but I replace mine every oil change, they are very cheap, $1.69 at NAPA.
If you still have the stock wires and plugs, they will definetly help! The stock plugs lose there pucks and the stock wires were causing some misfires on an Autotap read. Don't believe GM's claim about the longevity of these items.
They wont add any performance but will allow you to get everything that your origional horsepower raring gave you. If the origional ones were marginal you were loosing power. New ones will give you back what you lost.
#8 is easy. #7 isnt that bad getting it out, but man what a pain in the A@@ getting the wire on the plug. I just changed mine with NGK tr55s & Accel 300+ wires. The damn plug wire heatshields made it a bitch getting the accels on the plug. I finally gave up & just put the wires on without the shields.
AZGASSER,
Just changed mine. Go to Tools-Tech Tips-C5. There is a write up there that is pretty good. The article suggests getting a SNAP-ON Double Swivel 5/8 6-point Spark Plug Socket. This will definately make it easier, but not necessary. You just need to loosen the plug and then remove it by hand. Make sure you leave the spark plug socket on the plug. It makes it easier for your fingers to turn. Also, if you have some miles on your car, I have 50,000, do a decarb. This is also under tech-tips. Very easy to do and I could not believe the wake up call my car has received from the decarb and change in sparkplugs (NKG T55 IX). Good Luck!!
