Torque Tube Problem?
My 98 has started to make a rattling noise. It sounds like a couple of rocks being shaken inside a pop can. It only does this while the car is accelerating, once you lay off the throttle it goes away, there is no vibration in the car. The dealer could not find any thing obvious when they had it on the hoist, so they THINK it might be the TT.
Has anyone had this same experience that can verify the dealers guess ? Thanks.
Several people have had the inner "donut" bolts either brake or work loose. If you can narrow it down to the torque tube, that is probably your problem.
Try jacking the rear of the car, and letting it run the rear wheels slowly. If you hear the noise, try and located it, CAREFULLY!

Re: Torque Tube Problem? (Mark 84ltblu)
Thanks for the replies everyone. I talked to a mechanic today who owns a vette and he suggested the same thing, up my gas octane and see if it goes away. I've been told to go from a 91 to a 94 octane gas for this car and it will run much better.
I've only owned this car since last July and it's nice to have a forum like this to get ideas and suggestions from when things like this come up. I've been warned never to accept a dealers diagnoses as correct, always get a second opinion
If you up your octane, it will take a while to get the low octane fuel flushed out of the system and your engine management will probably need to compensate for the new octane level. I would recommend you give it 50 miles or so before you say it was octane related or not.
It definitely sounds like it is detonation if it only happens during acceleration. If it is audible detonation, you should get it taken care of pronto before it does damage to the bottom end of your engine.
Sorry for stupid question again but what in torque tube and where is it?
See that tube in center? That's the torque tube. It bolts to the back of the engine in the front and the front of the tranny in the back and surrounds the drive shaft. It acts as a stiffening/alignment bridge in the drive train. :yesnod:
Now I have a question about the torque tube:D
Before installation cam, the car is not shaking much when idle so I just hear a little rattle underneath of the shifter. Now after installing a big cam, it's shaking while idle and I can hear the rattle more underneath the shifter.
should it be something with the torque tube?
I think that noise would be move likely from the exhaust/headers. The cam lope shakes the car from the engine...that is attached to the exhaust. The exhaust is "hung with spring retainers and rubber bushings to allow movement.
The torque tube is very strong and solidly bolted to the trannie and engine. If it makes noise it would come from inside the tube.
Check the spring retainers that hold up the intermidiate pipe between the headers and the catback.

Re: Torque Tube Problem? (therefman)
I had the car to another shop today. They said it was NOT engine ping, tried doing a brake stand to put motor under load and NO noise. They put the car up on the hoist and put it in gear and tried accelerating while in the air and NO noise, seems to be only when the car is on the ground that it makes this noise. They told me to bring it back and leave it and they would find the Damn noise for me.

Re: Torque Tube Problem? (davidfarmer)
Hi Dave, had the car up on a hoist and tried running the car in forward and reverse and NO noise from anywhere. Put it back on the ground and the noise returns. Totally stumped!!
